Aloha Taropatch members!
I attended a slack key workshop in San Antonio last weekend (4/21/2007) led by Jim Garson from the University of Houston. I saw some good slack-key playing by Jim and his co-hort (whose name escapes me, I'm sorry). They were both very gracious in sharing their expertise, and clue-ing me in to great resources like taropatch.net!
The experience has gotten me fired up to find other people in the Central Texas area who play slack key and want to get together once in a while to share our love of Hawaiian music and slack key guitar. I have to confess, I'm a novice at slack key guitar, but I'll learn quickly. I've been playing guitar for 25+ years.
Many Mahalos,
Matt Lehman

Aloha Matt ... I'm Scott Alley - Jim Garson's 'cohort' at the slack key workshop in San Antonio last month. It was good to meet you, and know that you're still interested in learning slack key. If you are ever in the Houston area on a Sunday, the Houston Slackers usually get together for a kanikapila and practice session at 2 PM.
You can contact Jim @ 713-524-9594 or me at 281-638-1756 |

Scott,
thanks for the reply and the encouragement! I may take you up on your invite one of these days in the near future, so I'll keep your numbers handy.
The info you both shared has already gotten me very much more comfortable in taro patch tuning, and given direction and new excitement to my practice.
Thanks again for sharing your time and talent! It was great. Anytime either of you are in the Austin area, drop me an email.

Hi Matt, Good to hear from you and to hear of your excitiement about slack key. Feel free to contact me or scott anytime with questions. Is there any chance you could go to one of the workshops given by Georege Kahumoku or Keola Beamer in Hawaii? I'll be going to one of each in about 3 weeks. George's workshop still has some room. For quicker response try me at jgarson @ uh.edu Jim Garson |
