I just missed Led this week because of a wrong turn and Chicago traffic. To console myself, I have been thinking about the big name performers that I have seen. I don't go to concerts often so when I do it is usually because I admire the performer very much. These are the performers that I felt compelled to go see...
Andres Segovia Christopher Parkening George Jones Keola Beamer Allison Krause and Union Staion ZZ top Yes Restless Heart
Performers I would really like to see...
Vince Gill Don Ross Ozzie Kotani Led Kaapana Ricky Scaggs
Any favoites out there?

I've seen most of the Hawaiian performers and I love them all. Two specific concerts come to mind. I was physically sick with anticipation of my first Makaha Sons concert. Still my most memorable musical event. Also, I had a previous pre-Hawaiian music life playing the blues and I got to see Stevie Ray Vaughan a couple of times before he died. Made me realize why I like that music so much. |

Bob,
I saw Brendan and Jake (Umphrey's McGee) do an acoustic concert at the Chicago History Museum in March. Lucky you live Chicago! |

Being in the autumn of my life, I've seen quite a bit of performers from my tastes in a variety of music. But just to shed another light about live performances, I found it rewarding not only to focus on the headliner, but also the other musicians performing. I remember seeing Sheila E -- prior to her hitting it big with Prince -- in a small restaurant in SF East Bay performing with her dad. She was playing on a full set of drums, and what I was mesmorized with was the groove she and the bass player had. They had eye contact with each other and were feeding off driving each other making music. At an Angela Bofill concert, I got chicken skin with the gospel choir she had singing backup. Whenever a headliner has backup singers I always like to see their expressions and movements. Probably goes back to when I saw the Temptations, and Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, 77.88. This past Christmas time I saw Amy Guillome perform, and was later informed of the talented musicans who accompanied her e.g. Bobby Igano. Now that I get the chance to sit in, I am in awe of all the musicians who get up and play without charts. It's amazing how they just do it. And when they're good enough to hold the audience captive, it's just great to be there and be part of it. I am fortunate to live in an area where a lot of popular main event acts will book. So I've seen those who have made it big, and also those who are big in a genre that has smaller followings in comparison, i.e. Hawaiian music. Lucky to see here Makaha Sons, Keali'i Reichel, Raiatea Helm, Steve Espionola, Herb Ohta, Jr, Daniel Ho, Hapa, Na Leo, Amy Guillome, C&K. And now that I have a greater appreciation for this music when visiting Hawaii I'll try to catch the musicians on their home turf. My recent visit I throughly enjoyed Kelly Boy (Kapena) performing with family on Lei Day and at Honey's Mike Kaawa and Cru' including a guest appearance of Fran Guidry who just enjoyed playing. That joy easily transfers over to the audience. So I'll finish up just saying if you catch any good live performance you're lucky to be a part of it. |

There are many artists and groups I would love to see. But since my time is at a premium between work and family, most of the time I would rather just jam with friends, with players who are more skilled than I am, people who can teach me more about the music and whom I can share the music with. I don't think I'll ever have the money to make pilgrimages to the islands for music or to buy $100 concert tickets to see the Stones, so I would rather just make and share music than pursue the experiences of watching it. My 2 cents, Jesse Tinsley |

I'm with Jessie, or wish I could join him. Before 2 yrs ago, I had only seen Keali`i Reichel. Fortunately, the series at Whittier College is still very affordable and unlike Jessie, this area gets fun performances at the local Borders Books. With lessons and concerts now heading for $100, I will treasure all the time I have with friends even more. See you in a couple weeks, Keneke Ka. n |

We are finally getting some Hawaiian venues in Las Vegas to present Hawaiian shows. Its still early to announce all but I can say that Gary Haleamau and his great band will be performing every Sunday all summer. Look for details in the Performance/Event Forum or go to www.garyhaleamau.com You can hear some of his great music there |

Jesse, I'd have to agree with you, it is getting very expensive to see quality entertainment these days. We missed a lot of good concerts while we were raising the boys. Tough to do for a family on a budget.
I remember when my wife and I went to see the Beach Boys - our first concert together - almost 30 years ago, it cost us $8.00 each. The tickets we just bought for Allison Krause and Diana Krall?...$80.00 each after adding on the $10.00 so-called convenience charge - convenient for who? Definetly not me!
But I will tell you one thing. It always inspires me to come home and pick up my guitar after seeing a good concert.
Couple of others I forgot about:
Nickel Creek...how could I forget them, one of the best concerts I've been to in a long time.
Fiona Apple Flaming Lips Unwritten Law with Paint By Numbers (my son's band) |
