Our friends just returned from Oahu and brought me a copy of "He Mele Aloha" I've been looking for this book for a long time...finally I have it thanks to them. Now I just have to try and find recordings of all the songs that I'm not familiar with so I can learn the tunes. I guess that'll be my next great pursuit.

What? You mean high "E" is the TOP string. No way dude! That changes everything!

That book is one of the best resources out there. Funny thing that while we were on O`ahu, I noticed that quite a few of the musicians we listened to or talked to had that book. George Kuo had it, Kory Oliveras, who played at Tiki's had it, and I know a couple of others did, but I can't remember whom. I thought it amazing that George Kuo had it open on his music stand while playing his gig at the Marriott. I guess I just assumed (obviously, very stupidly) that he would know, like efery Hawaiian song ever done. That would be like Paul should know every Italian song, and I don't think he really knows how to play any. Hey Cumbare....

We're lucky here in northern California - Tom Hedtke, the GM of one of the Sacramento Borders stores, has a great Hawaiian section with books, CDs, DVDs, etc. AND he brings every musician from Hawai`i to the store that he can get (there are never fewer than 100 people there for Hawaiian music, and usually a lot more. For Jake there were something like 400! ) Most of the musicians from Hawai`i know how much support there is in this area for them, and they all request to play Tom's Borders. We're very lucky!

Anyways, we've all bought our copies of He Mele Aloha from Tom.

Just wanted to mention for anyone else who desperately wants the book (if you don't live within reasonable driving distance from Sacramento!), you can order it over the web from "Editions Limited" in Hawai`i, and all profits from the sale go to the Lunalilo home. http://www.hawaiipublisher.com/000_HeMeleAloha_TitlePg.htm

(You can also order it thru Booklines Hawai`i) http://www.booklineshawaii.com/book/bmu/256404.html

I bought mine from Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach several years ago. She is great source for both ukulele and Hawaiian music.
