Shirley Orlando, owner of Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach has about converted her shop to an ukulele paradise. She's built a bit bigger stage at the back of the shop and has seating for about 80! Already 2 ukulele groups meet there on Tuesdays and on Thursdays. And she carries a fine line of ukuleles and accessories including good tuners.
Last night she christened the new stage with a performance featuring Kimo Hussey. He was joined on stage by Shirley, Bobby Tomei, 2 others and Nipono (Cathy-Ann ??)playing that big base. Two of Nipono's friends danced for us, coming up the aisles through the audience. If you went to Jeff Peterson's concert in Torrance, you would recognize them. And that instrument is over 200 yrs old! Shirley was playing guitar, an older gentleman was playing an older Martin 4-string guitar, and the others, of course, played ukulele. The music in the concert, and at the venue is not strictly Hawaiian, but certainly influenced and inclusive of a lot of island music. There was audience participation in several of the songs, including "Blowin' in the Wind" led by Kimo. Pretty much all the audience sang and the voices were lovely. And like all the concerts I've been to lately, there was a fine tribute to Don Ho.
Mahalo to Shirley for providing the venue and comfortable gathering place for the local ukulele community.
