Hi everyone this is Kealii. I apolojize for what has happend. It was told to me that I will be removed form the ballot. It is okay. I cannot understand the reson but it does not matter since I cannot rember even doing an album even tho I can see my picture on the cd cover. because of this, i think that i will announce that i will not do music again, atleast for now. thank you for support, but please dont let it botrher you also. if the awards people did what they have to do, than it is ok. but thank you for supporting me and liking my music. there is one more cd that will be relesed it was one that i did when i was in maui before the stroke. it has 8 songs and will most likly be my last release and i hope that you injoy it asmuch as my other cds.
just to be cler, I am a resident of hawaii and a resident of alaska. but, whatever the people from hara decided, than it is ok with me.
thank you for helping and for being good friends.

As a voting member of HARA, I'm disturbed by this -- and have emailed Pacific Hawaiian asking for clarification.
According to my ballot, Keali`i was nominated for Hawaiian Language Performance, which is not limited to island residents...but perhaps there's been a change in the requirements.
I'll let you know what reply I get. |

I'va also asked Kenneth Makuakane to look into this, and he assures me he is doing so (as best he can while travelling to the Mainland.) However, he tells me that the Hawaiian Language Performance category (one of the specially adjudicated ones) IS restricted to Island residents only - so there is some confusion there.
Auntie Maria - do you know if there is a way for HARA members to get access to the organization's by-laws, regulations, Hoku rules, etc.? |

The following is from Na Hoku Hanohano web site:
The Academy annually produces the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in a live television broadcast honoring the achievements of excellence in the recording arts. All product created, produced, engineered, and recorded by a local resident artist, musician, or technician released during the eligibility year and primarily for distribution in Hawai'i is eligible for inclusion on the preliminary voting ballot. The final ballot is made up of a maximum of five of the top voted preliminary ballot nominees in each category. |

There are different residency requirements for different categories, however. If I may quote from an article I wrote for the Northwest Hawai`i Times when this issue came up last year (re: Manny K. Fernandez) ---
"HARA’s regulations state that, to be eligible for the General Categories (Album, Group, Male/Female Vocalist, Song, Compilation, Anthology, Most Promising Artist), the Technical Categories (Graphics, Liner Notes, Engineering), or the Adjudicated Categories (Hawaiian Language, Haku Mele), the nominee must be a Hawai`i state resident. Non-resident artists may be eligible in a Genre Category (Hawaiian, Contemporary Hawaiian, Contemporary, Instrumental, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Religious, Christmas, Comedy) if the album was recorded in Hawai`i or is widely distributed in the state by a Hawai`i distributor." |

Retro, you're right -- my bad for not remembering that the residency rules are applied to all awards, except for the genre categories. These qualifiers have been clearly stated on all Na Hoku Hanohano ballots in the past.
What? You expect me to remember????
As for the HARA by-laws, etc., anyone can ask to see them (the law for any non-profit organization in the USA). The catch is, the organization is only required "to make them public" -- which usually means you have to go to the office of the organization for viewing. And they are not required to make a copy for you. At least that's been my experience with non-profits (in Hawai`i, and California).

Ahh - now the question is, residency for the whole year? How does that get proved? Best of luck and best wishes with this Korrie. Perhaps you could write an immediate protest letter; or even phone if you still have the info of the person who called in the first place. I'm sure it caught you completely off-guard. nancy |

Keali`i & Korrie: the single most important thing at present is healing and recovery. None of the rest of this has any bearing at present, and it can't be allowed to distract you from getting your life back together. If you wish to let it go, we must respect your wishes. I've said it before - until the day comes that your memories return, the rest of us will hold them in safekeeping for you.
With all our love and respect... =Gregg= |

Aloha Keali'i, I just wanted to say thank you for posting. It was clearly distrubing to hear what the HARA did to you. It is unfair. I can't wait till your new CD comes out. Just continue on your healing and recovery process. Thank you for being a friend.

I agree with what she just wrote. I wanted to add that I hope you recover soon because I'd love it if you wrote/recorded more music. Take care, 'Alika |
