If you had to take only one song with you to Heaven, what would it be?
Mine would be "Kanaka Waiwai", From "The Sons of Hawaii" five faces album (Folk Songs of Hawaii).
If I had to play one Hawaiian song for a friend, that would be it.
For an encore I'd pick "'Alika", by Raiatea Helm, "Sweet and Lovely".
I know that's two....but it's my post...so I get to cheat.

As everyone here knows, choosing one song is so hard, and, at least for me, that choice can change over time.
However, the one song that I have kept coming back to since I first heard it many many years ago, that has helped me get through some rough emotional times, and that I also love to just pick up the guitar and play, even in good times, is "Ku'u Lei Awapuhi." My favorite performance of it is Steve Sano's. Ozzie's and Keola's come in as very close runners up. |

You are absolutely right with your disclaimer, Ray. It is very hard, and an unfair question to boot. But the question remains. Note that I cheated and picked two. |

I do believe that heaven will be just chock-o-block full of Hawaiian music. Matter of fact, I think Heaven will look like Hawai`i. As said above, there are so many....but if I had to choose just one, it would be Wahine Ilikea. The melody is so lovely and the lyrics so poetic.
Now, I don't know about where yunz are from, but in W.Va., as maudlin as it sounds, people talk about what music they want at the church when they die. For some reason, I've been thinking about that lately. It is pretty much standard to have "Precious Memories" and "Will the Circle be Unbroken". I do believe I would like "Oh, Come Angel Band" and "I am Weary, Let me Rest". When my brother-in-law passed away back in 2001, my sister wanted certain music, but because he was buried in the Catholic church, they would not let her choose anything that was not the normal Catholic dirges. |

I hate to say this, but I do not understand why you do not give credit to the person who first made "Alika" famous, the amazing Auntie Genoa Keawe. I believe she, too, sings it very well, and it is hard to believe that she can still hold the long high note at 80-something years old! Go Genoa! |

89 years old, she is. I find it amazing, as well. She can get herself up on stage, with minimal help, and she can wail away on that `ukulele. She is some lady! |

Alex, I certainly meant no disrespect for Auntie Genoa. It's funny that you mention her, cause as I was doing the original post last night I was transferring on of her old LP's to CD, and 'Alika was on it. Aside from Raiatea's amazing voice, I just like the overall arrangement and the steel guitar in the background. It just takes me to a different place when I listen to it. |

For a Hawaiian song "Ku'u Lei Awapuhi" would be a good choice for me too. Otherwise it would have to be Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze". |

Raymond beat me to it, almost word for word. If there is one tune that most inspired me to try to play slack myself, "Ku'u Lei Awapuhi" is it.

If it's heaven, the songs are already there. Do you mean I can only take one instrument? Or do I have to choose which one song I'm allowed to sing? If they allow ME to sing, Y'all may not be in heaven! I'll leave the CD's behind and bring a record 'cause it's got 2 sides. Hawaii Aloha and Koke'e. |

Hmmmmm, I'm gonna reword the post. Let's pretend that in order to get into heaven you have to please St. Peter by letting him listen to one Hawaiian song.
Now...what song would you have him hear.
I agree with those of you that feel that heaven would be like Hawaii and that there would already be lots of Hawaiian music in the elevator on the way up, and once there it would be a nonstop luau. But your ticket to get in would be to convince St. Pete, with a song. Doesn't have to be religious either.....Pete's way past that. But it has to be Hawaiian, cause Pete's just in that mood today.
Let's just have a little fun with this. |

Well, I could dance "Ulupalakua" for Pete, I s'pose.
Oh, wait...to get INTO heaven? Uh, maybe I better not dance at all...
Hah! Like I even have a chance at getting to audition! |

Well, I figure he won't judge me on how purdy my voice is (or ain't, actually)...so I would still rely on the purdiest song....Wahine Ilikea. I figure God gonna like someone who praises the beautfy of his land and water and mists......Better not sing none o dem kolohe mele. |

Why don't you just ask what is your favorite hawaiian song or what music would you like played at your funeral? The St Peter story is kind of shaky. I like too many hawaiian songs to decide on one. I would have to name at least ten. Kawika, Kaulana Napua, Hiilawe, Heeia, Ulili E, Pua Hone, Pua Lilia, Pua Lililehua, Waika, Kuu Home o Kahaluu, Aloha Oe... Sorry, I just can't pick one. |

Hiram - I do really like Pua Lililehua...the melody is so very beautiful. I was just listening to it in the car on the way to work this morning, by Hui `Ohana.
You hit the nail on the head...so many Hawaiian songs, and they are all beautiful and unique and touching ...each in its own way. |
