I don't remember seeing this on TP, so...
The latest HARA newsletter announced the winner of HARA's 30th Anniversary Song Contest. To quote, "UH Hilo Hawaiian Language Professor Keola Donaghy's mele entitled "Hoku Pio 'Ole" shined brightly."
Congratulations, Keola.

Congratulations, Keola!
I had read that Kainani Kahaunaele recorded the song for the awards show- is there a chance we will be able to hear it someday? |

Aloha kakou and mahalo to all for your kind thoughts, it certainly was exciting to have my mele selected for the 30th anniversary of the awards.
I'm not sure exactly how it is going to be used. I was originally told that it would be played on breaks going into and coming back from commercials, but haven't heard much about it in a while. Yes, Kainani Kahaunaele sang it and did an amazing job, and came up with a beautiful harmony part. It was intended to be just a demo for the song contest but I guess they were happy with it as it was submitted.
I'm considering signing over the rights to the song to HARA, and perhaps will do the same with the recording if Kainani agrees to it. I'm not sure if they have a mechanism in place for handling royalties so I need to speak to the board about it, probably after the awards. Whatever happens I'll post it on Nahenahe.
Mahalo again,
Keola |

Keola, You also wrote the lyrics to Ken Makuakane's song "He Nani Moloka'i" too? You are listed as one of the Engineers as well. Congratulations! |

Mahalo e Mika'ele. Yes, it was quite a year and a half of working with Kenneth on the release. We co-write 16 of the 20 songs, and are busy writing material for his next release.
BTW, I posted a new podcast today and will probably do a few more before I shut the podcasts down for good this summer. I promised a few people I'd feature their music and have struggled to finish one long podcast, so I will be doing several short ones. The final cut on the latest is a remix of our song "Days Gone Bye" from "Makuakane" with rock drums. There is also a cut from Hoku Zuttermeister's debut.

Aloha kakou, by popular demand "Na Hoku Pio ‘Ole" can now be heard on the HARA homepage:
http://nahokuhanohano.org/
Keep in mind that this was meant to be a demo, but time constraints prevented us from redoing or remixing it. Kainani was amazing, came up with the harmony part in the second verse and chorus on the spot. E nanea (enjoy).

Keola's too modest to add this -- so I will.
You can also hear his composing skill on Keali`i Reichel's 2006 Christmas CD, "Maluhia". |
