I've been checking out this board for awhile and finally joined up. I'm in the Chicago area but lived on O'ahu for a few years.
I have heaps of Hawaiian albums - mostly traditional - not much Jawaiian stuff ... from many trips to Jelly's to get them.
Used to go to the Moana a lot to see groups like Olomana and Ho'okena and anywhere to hear good slack key. We don't get much Hawaiian music in this area. Will See Makaha Sons on Aug. 4. Have seen Led Ka'apana a few times and Dennis Kamakahi whenever he's in town. Took Hawaiian Culture with Kawai Hewett and Holoua Stender at WCC and my Hawaiian language classes at Kamehameha from kumu Panui. Sang in the classical choir Aaron Mahi was conducting and just caught up with Nola Nahulu at the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown Colony back in May.
A couple of years ago, I got my heart stolen away by the most awesome Australian country music artist so haven't been listening all that much to my local CDs. I think I have over 300 albums - lots of Gabby, Ray Kane, Olomana, Ho'okena, Sons of Hawai'i, Makaha Sons, Iz, Sistah Robi, Kawai Hewett and a lot of real classics you can't get anymore.

Aloha and welcome to the Patch! I see that you have a wonderful collection of Hawaiian music. You are so lucky! I took all of my hawaiian culture classes and Hawaiian language at HCC under the leadership and guidance of Kumu J. Kimo Alama Keaulana. Hope that you will keep posting.

Lee's not anywhere close to Hawaiian (he's country - any Aussies on the board I'm sure will agree he's awesome) but nonetheless, I adore him and his music. I actually find traditional Hawaiian and country music very similar.
As you can see, he's a cutie!!!
Maybe someone can answer a question. I used to go to the Hilo Hawaiian a lot and two of the people who were always so nice to me were Alberta and Alvin Kalima. I know Alvin passed away but does anyone know how Alberta is doing? I know she had a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair and Alvin was taking care of her.

E komo mai i loko! Holoua is a personal friend back in the day and his brother lives up here in Seattle. We get to jam from time to time and have big time fun. I saw you post your library once. It is quite a collection. |
