This is my discography of Hawaiian albums. I have a few more that haven't been added but this is what I have cataloged. I don't know what's hard to get or rare anymore. Maybe someone can tell me if I'm missing anything I should have. I'm not concentrating on getting Australian country music where there's a huge amount of talent. I can still find Hawaiian CDs when our local library has book sales, that include CDs.

Yes -

Your collection is quite nice, maybe twice as many Hawaiian recordings as we have & I would love to have some of your older ones!

There are a few more recent ones you might want to get (off the top of my head):

Ozzie Kotani / Steve Sano - "Rememberance"
(Japanese songs that were popular in Hawaii)
AND his collection of some of Queen Liliuokalani's songs
title "???"

Newer one by Dennis Kamakahi (& David) - will have to post title later

George Kahumoku - Hawaiian Love songs (his best recent one I.M.H.O.)
or, if you like his stories, "Footprints in the Poi" is good too.

Hapa - "Namahana"

Keola Beamer - "White Mountain Journal"

and ALL of the last three years Grammy Winners are very good too!

I really don't care for Hapa. Don't want any Japanese songs either. I prefer most everything in Hawaiian language and prefer vocal to instrumental. Not big on hapa haole songs either. Guess you can see that from my discography. Not big on Jawaiian either. Wish Hui Aloha would do more but think that group is pau.

Lately, I've been on eBay.au hunting for Australian country music. My favourite artist is their top artist.

Dennis and David are great. Dennis is one of my favourite songwriters as is Kawai Hewett. Dennis is so kolohe.

Be aware that if you prefer only Hawaiian language, you would leave out many songs written by Queen Liliuokalani (such as "Aloha 'Oe") and also much of the stuff written by Dennis Kamakahi (like "Koke'e"), and some of the music of the Sons of Hawaii (such as "Morning Dew"). Many of these folks are/were fond of including English, Spanish, and French in many of their songs!

I said 'prefer' as I think it adds to the song. I love Dennis' music whether it's in English or Hawaiian. I do have a lot of English language too. The real chicken skin song for me is 'Ka Wai Lehua 'A'ala Ka Honua' by Frank Hewett. I've heard other artists do that song but not like the way he does it.

Was funny ... today I was in the local card shop (I'm in Illinois) and they are pushing Lu'au parties for the summer. Walk in there and what's on the music ... Pops ... and Na Leo. What a shock. Didn't expect to hear that. Made me hum along.

As you can see from my record collection, I have a wide assortment of music in my collection.

Hey, next time you're there, ask them who provides their music. If they get it from Muzak, that's the program that I used to do. (More likely, they just got some compilation CDs and do it themselves, but still, I'm curious.)

I think they had some CD on. I know the local Borders has played Iz quite a bit. He's got more fans then he realises and some of them don't know that he's passed on.

This is one of my favorite recordings! For history's sake, you have to pick up his other CD entitled "Akoni and Da Palapalai Patch." Although Akoni has since disappeared, the Palapalai Patch remains and are now known as "Na Palapalai." So this CD by Akoni gives a glimpse of the greatness that would become Na Palapalai. Just subtract one Akoni and add one superb Keao Costa.

You have a very nice and very well-rounded collection! I will supplement your list with some suggestions as time permits. Ever since Honolulu Magazine published the "50 Greatest Hawai`i LPs of All Time" issue (and accompanying CD and coffee table book), I have wanted to publish a list of my own. (In some respects I think the editors and contributors grossly missed the mark.) I don't think a list of the "greatest" can simply boil down to the "enjoyable." The recordings dubbed "great" should also have historic and cultural importance. They should be valuable educational references for future generations. I'll make a list someday, and hopefully the list will also become an accompanying podcast.

The Honolulu Magazine list was simply baffling. Can you really include an entire LP simply because of the popularity of one song? I am referring of course to the Beamers' "Honolulu City Lights." That is the best song on the album. Beyond this, the production values of the LP as a whole are bizarre - with, for starters, so much reverb it sounds like it was recorded on the "holodeck" of the Starship Enterprise. If you are looking for a Beamer CD of true cultural significance and one that is truly Hawaiian, then Keola's "Island Born" is my first choice.

Bill, I've got to disagree with your assessment of the "Honolulu City Lights" album -- it's a classic, from start to finish, and not just for the title track.

The panel which selected these albums (luminaries in the island music industry), based their selections on several criteria. Here's some of the article about the "50 Greatest"...complete with descriptions of why each album qualified:

This is a very nice discussion. There will never be a true list that would please everyone. I believe each person possesses his or her personal favorites that will definitely different from another person's list. This is very healthy, because music is a personal thing, not a group hug.
I was part of the panel to choose those albums and only a couple of my choices made it on the final list. This is to be expected, when many people are asked to choose.
BTW, Mahalo LovinLK for your list. You possess all of my Mango CDs and almost all of my Pandanus Club CDs. I am very humbled that they are included in your collection. Congrats. Keep the collection going, because there are SO MANY more wonderful recordings.
