Been here many times...finally getting around to introducing myself.
My name is Dayn and I live in Seattle. I used to live on the Big Island for about 4 years and it feels like home more than the NW where I was born, raised and currently reside.
When I am missing Hawaii I usually turn to music...listening and playing. I play guitar and ukulele and would love to connect with other players in this area who want to do some Hawaiian music. I don't really know any of the traditional songs but I am proficient enough to pick them up quick.
Looking forward to talking story with you!

Welcome Dayn - Go to the Kanikapila thread and look at the "Seattle Area Experiment" for lots of playmates. I'd be surprised if you didn't have a play-date in your near future. n |

Aloha, Dayn.
Check out the "Seattle-area experiment" thread in the kanikapila forum. There's a regular gathering in Bellevue two Saturdays a month. Keep your eyes peeled here as well for mention of other kani, shows and activities at places like Kona Kitchen. SUPA (Seattle `Ukulele Players Association) meets monthly, too.
Check out the "NWHawnCalendar" Yahoo group for upcoming events and a way to connect with other locals around here. Pick up the monthly newspaper, Northwest Hawai`i Times, and listen to the weekly radio shows, Hawai`i Radio Connection.
You'll get drawn right into the "local" community very quickly. Here's some links for things mentioned above ---

Aloha Dayn and welcome to Taro Patch. You live in a good part of the country to participate in wonderful Hawaiian music. As Pua Kai said above, you are bound to find playmates.
This is a great forum with wonderful contributions and such knowledgeable and sharing participants.

Welcome from me, too. There will be a kanikapila at the Kona Kitchen (corner of 5th Ave NE and NE 85th St in Maple Leaf) starting around 9am. We jam for a while, eat ono breakfast, then jam again 'till around noon. Right, Thumbstruck???? |

Hi Dayn, I live in Kailua-Kona. My wife and I run a website about the Big Island (http://www.konaweb.com/) and there is a web cam which you can take a look at when you are missing Kona. It overlooks the seawall down by the pier, and you can see down the coast toward Keauhou. Ironically, I was just in Seattle (and Port Townsend) for vacation two weeks ago. Would have been nice to talk...
I have lived in Holualoa (just up the hill from Kailua-Kona) since 1995. I make a koa/mango three string bass which is tuned to open G. I play Hawaiian acoustic lap steel guitar, and also back up some of the local musicians with my bass. Right now I am playing with Buddy Fo, and getting ready to record with Joe Spencer's "Merrie Monarchs".
Next time you get a chance to visit, make sure you look me up. There are some very fun kanikapila opportunities here on the island! If you are thinking of visiting Hawaii in December, check out Keoki Kahumoku's Hawaiian Music Camp in Pahala! http://www.konaweb.com/keoki
