Well, I can't wait until the mele man gets here with my latest order from Auntie Maria. If the whole Cyril CD is as good as the sound clips, then this is one major blockbuster. Wow! Interesting concept of having two of the same mele...two of He`heia and two of `O Kamawailualani.
From Dancing Cat: Kilakila ’O Moanalua/ Inu I Ka Wai Vocal- 12 string guitar Atta’s C Major Tuning (C-G-E-G-C-E) background vocals on Inu I Ka Wai by Bla Pahinui and Martin Pahinui
Cyril learned this medley of two old traditional favorites from his father, and they translate as “Majestic Moanalua” and “Drink the Water”. He also recalls hearing it played and sung by his father’s longtime friend Andy Cummings, who Gabby played steel guitar for from the late 1930’s through the 1950s with his band, Andy Cummings and His Hawaiian Serenaders, and Gabby always credited him as a big influence and inspiration. This song is a good example of the kind of lighthearted sing-along one often heard at parties.
Gabby Pahinui arranged and recorded it on the 1977 album GABBY PAHINUI HAWAIIAN BAND, VOLUME 2 (Panini Records). Cyril here, as Gabby also did, just plays the chorus part of Inu I Ka Wai, letting it function as a bridge for Kilakila ’O Maunalua. For the vocals on Inu I Ka Wai, brothers Bla and Martin dropped by to lend their support. It’s nice to hear all three making magic together again!

I am really excited to hear this CD, too! Every slack key artist is unique, but Cyril's approach to his own special tuning and the jazz influences he embraces are very special, indeed.
Andy was more than an influence and inspiration to Gabby; they were great friends. It was Andy who was by Gabby's side when he collapsed and died on the 11th hole at Kahuku Golf Course.
If you haven't heard the original medley of "Kilakila `O Moanalua" and "Inu I Ka Wai" by Gabby, you owe it to yourself to pick it up. Although the technology had been invented 25 years earlier, traditional Hawaiian musicians had still not yet embraced multitrack recording yet. But this track is a real treat because Gabby performed all of the instrumental parts himself - 6- and 12-string guitars, 8-string and baritone `ukulele, steel guitar, and bass. Ry Cooder later overdubbed some mandolin, but the rest is all Gabby.

OK. Mele man came two days ago, bringing me a box full of goodies. Out of that bunch of CDs I got, this is the champion among them. Mark my words. This is the Grammy Winner for 2007. And it will probably take several Na Hokus as well. Even hard for me to figure out what words to describe it. At first I was a bit skeptical about having two versions of two different songs on the same album. I was thinking to myself, "what??? He doesn't have enough music to choose from, he's got to repeat songs?". Oh ye of little faith...Cyril knew exactly what he was doing. The contrasts between He`eia that opens up the CD as an instrumental version and then later on the vocal version are eye-opening. Most often this song is done kind of harsh, I guess, for lack of a better term. Kind of growly vocals and sharp rythyms. On here, the instrumental version is very soft and sweet. The vocal is sung so sweetly, slower, very soulful. On Kilakila ’O Moanalua/ Inu I Ka Wai medley, he has two of the best back up singers that can be found -- Bla and Martin! This CD gets you tapping your toes a bit, or swaying hips for the hula, or relaxing you in your noho paipai. Don't miss it. Every minute you wait to order it is a great missed opportunity.
