This CD is a compilation by various Big Island musicians.
Loeka
Rupert Tripp, Jr.
Rodgers Lena Naipo
Nephi Pomaika`i Brown
Kevin Teves
Keoki Kahumoku

This is a very interesting mix of mele, some traditionally done, others less so. My Hula Girl by Randy Lorenzo is very jazzy and more like soul music coming out of Motown. Dunno how someone could dance hula to it because of the beat, but then again, who da heck am I...certainly not a hula expert by any means. It is a well done song, none the less. Of particular note is Keoki Kahumoku's version of I Kona. I have only heretofore heard the song sung ki`eki`e style by Led or Dennis Pavao or Steven Espaniola, or for that fact, any of the myriads of folks we listened to when on O`ahu back in May. Keoki does not sing this mele in falsetto style. It suits Keoki's voice well and is a fresh take on a classic. Matter of fact, this album is a breath of fresh air. Nothing wrong with the old standards done the traditional way, but this seems to be an effort to giving new life and excitement to the standards. A good disc to add to your collection.
