I just learned "Hawaii Aloha" from the link posted above. I feel almost as though I've had a private lesson from Herb Ohta, Jr. (This fellow has that kind of personality, and voice, and...etc.)
Anyone know who wrote "Hawaii Aloha" and when? (I'd like to fill in the tab information.)
Lesson is very good. His alternate "C7" finger position sounded kind of odd when I tried it. (I may have done it wrong.) I reverted to the basic C7 on first fret of A string, and it sounds fine. Do you simply repeat the part I got through 2 minutes of the video? (My dial-up crashed before I could download the rest, after about half an hour). I'll try it later this week from a high speed connection. |
Thank you. |

Aloha e Absolute: Congrats on learning this beautiful mele.
This is one of the many songs composed by the Reverend Lorenzo Lyons, known as Makua Laiana, who had a church for many years at Waimea, Hawai`i. He died in 1886. A variant title for the song is "Ku`u One Hanau." The melody is from a Scots hymn, but I cannot remember the title of it.
If you can get the Eddie & Myrna Kamae film, "Earth, Words and Aloha", there is a fair amount of history about it in that film.
Hawai`i Aloha is commonly sung in a circle, with hands raised overhead at the conclusion of the final refrain.

Thanks for the information! (I'll keep my hands down. Hard to play ukulele if held over one's head.) |
Thank you. |
