Aloha mai Kakou! I know that this is off the subject but I am starting school at Honolulu Community College this coming Tuesday. I am really nervous, because I haven't been in school for about 8 years and I will be heading the books. The only thing that is keeping me from being nervous is that I been listening to my Hawaiian CD's, and I will be joining the Hawaiian Club- Hui 'Oiwi at Honolulu Community College this semester. Any suggestions will help. Mahalo for taking the time to read this.

Alana :)

Right on! You will do fine ... as a community college teacher (in CA), my numbah 1 piece of advice ... jus no fall behind. Even at da CC level, tings might go kinda fast, my students complain about dat all da time. If you stay honest wit yourself on wat you know and dunno, den you will know wat to study. Also, be sure to take breaks, music is an awesome one, I do dat myself hea. Playing ukulele an stuffs. :-) No stress eh! Be sure to enjoy yourself too.

shootz, dajoka.

Alana - best of luck to you.
What worked for me was to take good notes and then transcribe them into the computer that very same day while the info is fresh in your mind. It helped me to type the stuff because it forced me to read over the stuff again, and once I typed it, I remembered it. It was easy for me because I took notes in shorthand (I was a secretary long ago). Also helps to join a study group. Never put off doing your assignments/papers. Get on it right away, even if the assignments aren't due for a while. Never procrastinate, because when you are rushed trying to make up for lost time, you will undoubtedly do something incorrectly.

What classes are you going to be taking?

But crikey -- what happened to summer vacation? Is it time to start school again already? Back in the olden days when I was in school, it didn't start until after Labor Day. Even when I went to college (Kent State), it started late in September.

When I took chemistry at Kent, the professor was from India and had a very strong accent. I had such a heck of a time understanding him with all the complicated chemical names. He called "valence" "walence". And the way he said Avogadro's number was pretty funny, now that I think about it. All those chemistry words were hard to write in shorthand, too. I remember that in biology, we were dissecting fetal pigs. The smell of formaldehyde is one odor I will never forget. I had bio lab right before lunch. Went to the dining hall and guess what was for lunch? PORK CHOPS. Yuck! It made me turn vegetarian for about a year.

Another thing to do is find a few people in class and compare notes. Sometimes someone jotted something down that you didn't and vice versa. And make sure it's someone who took good notes. If your tests are open book, this will save you a lot of hassle. Sometimes you'll get quizzed on something in your notes that wasn't in the book.

Judging from your posting, you'll probably do well. Here's what I told students at the beginning of semesters, in no particular order:

- Don't let yourself fall behind.
- Get clear what you want from the class - some classes you take because you have to. - (Figure out what it takes to get the grade typically by asking around of others who took the class but also be open to the possibility that somehing will spark your interest and open up a whole new door for you) others because you are interested in the subject. -- (then don't be afraid to ask the teacher for extra resources - things you can follow up on now, or even later -- even if it isn't completely "on topic")
- If there's discussion built into the class, use the time to clarify what you're not sure of, and expand on things you only know a little, as opposed top showing how much you know. Don't be afraid to ask questions during discussion.
- You learn best when you are excited and passionate about a topic. Find something in the subject matter of the class that fascinates you, or excites you, and focus on that, branching out from there.
- Try to apply what you are learning to your life experiences -- see if the book learning makes sense, if it throws a new light on aspects of your life.
- Don't get so caught up in trying to make a grade that you won't have fun - both with this subject matter and campus life in general.

Good luck, and I hope you learn a thing or two that will help you to see the world and your life in a deeper way.

Alana, I've taught for over 45 years and was a community college teacher for 28. (Yes, I am an old geezer!) One of my biggest frustrations was the student who perhaps didn't get it but never approached me about it. If it doesn't make sense, ask the instructor. They are, for the most part, human and it is a good opportunity for them to find out that you are too. Very few look upon students as a lower form of life (although the chair of my doctoral committee did) and if you show an interest in learning the chances are he or she will do the best they can to help you.
Good luck and read the assignments before the class,
Sandy
