The new Zoom H2, the H4s little brother, is finally shipping. It's a stereo & surround (!) flash recorder... uses AA batteries, records at most WAV and MP3 formats, ships with a windscreen, mic adaptor & table top stand. Cute, too, in a Remington shaver sort of way.
Fed Ex just dropped off my review unit, which I will be doing my best to break in the next couple of weeks. I will keep ya posted here.
Gotta go pop some batteries in the puppy...

Or maybe "Sunshine of your love"

Yeah... Give Ginger Baker a call & see if he'll drop by
Sorry for the kidding...
...Just don't leave the H2 on the bathroom counter or you might get the "dawn Surprise".

What? You in a big hurry or something?
I am sure he will when he gets a Round Tuit.
Otherwise, why would he have posted at all?

A review is exactly what I am writing, Craig. It'll take a while -- I'll keep ya posted when it's up on line.
First impressions? Very favorable, actually.
What I like:
- Dual stereo mic capsules -- front and rear. Choose between 2 stereo patterns (90 degrees front or 120 degrees rear) or front & rear two track (great for interviews) or 4-track "surround"
- Everything important is accessable from front panel - very EZ to use
- Hardware level setting!!!!!!
What I don't:
- Seems pretty flimsy
- Itty bitty display
- There's probably something else but I can't think of any at the moment
So, howzit sound? On a first listen -- just fine. I took it to a jam session yesterday and made some tests. I think the little mics are dandy for field use - I really liked the choice of front+rear mics -- worked well for the session where everyone was playing in a circle.
Haven't tried remote mics, ditto testing surround, haven't tried most of the features, in fact.
It runs on two AA batteries & uses cheap flash memory. Comes with a nifty little tabletop stand or mic clip adaptor (yes, mic clip, not mic stand-- fits in a standard Sure mic clip) -- but it is threaded for a camera tripod, so that's handy. Also has a honkin' big windscreen.
Records at all the usual formats -- various WAV and MP3s rez.
Tha's all 4 now. |

Nice, well written and informative review.
(Of course it goes without saying that the mineshaft piano recording was in the key of A-flat Miner)
Thanks!

I liked your review. We jam alot and people sometimes record so they can learn a new song..It might be a useful tool like you said for practice sessions etc. So where do we go to get one. |
