Would it be possible to treat this thread as Slack Key/Ki Ho`alu? Posting such things as asking someone's whereabouts, who played with whom, obituaries, and other topics could be placed in "Talk Story". This would be in keeping with the other threads that follow: `Ukulele, Steel, Hawaiian kine Bass... I like seeing discussions about what we're working on musically - in slack key, on the guitar; about rhythm, vamps, chimes etc. I'm thinking this is a great place for the players to compare notes. Just askin' mahalo, nancy

Not a bad idea. But perhaps it would be better to seperate Slack Key Guitar and Hawaiian Music.
Slack Key Guitar could have discussions as Nancy suggested and also include discussions on slack key instructions -- books, DVD, internet (you tube).
Hawaiian Music could be for topics related to mele -- lyrics, performers of mele. Maybe Hawaiian Music should include the reviews of new CD/DVD of recording artist thus incorporating the existing thread.
No disrespect to slack key players (or bass players with their thread), but I uke, so I don't regularly follow this thread because I did expect most of this to be on slack key guitar. Didn't realize how much on Hawaiian Music in general could be found.

Thanks Genaro, There already is a thread for recordings, one for performances, one for books, one for videos..... folks aren't using them. I asked Andy awhile ago about the separation, but I think he felt we have enough divisions. But questions like who is part of the Sons of Hawai`i could really be handled under performances or recording - or Talk Story... As far as Hawaiian music goes, it makes sense to include words to songs we're trying to learn here without changing the title. It's just that this seems to be the catch-all of everyone and everything who/what/how/where has had anything to do with Hawaiian music of any sort. I've been hoping to return the thread to those who play slack key and hawaiian music... Hey, you going to Pahala in December? |

When I look at this forum -- Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar / Hawaiian Music Discussions on ki ho`alu and all hawaiian music -- I did not see an explicit definition and strict rules on what fits into what category. It seemed to me at the time that if I had questions regarding "all Hawaiian music" that this was the proper venue for asking those questions or discussing the topic. However, obviously, others are not sharing the same understanding. I have used "talk story" for general topics that do not seem to fit into any of these other categories. If I have questions regarding `ukulele, I put it there. We then seem to sometimes veer off from the main question asked into other peripheral issues. In my opinion, nothing wrong with that. That is what human interaction is all about.
I personally do not feel the great need for rigid structure, but if it makes someone else more comfortable, then OK. Nancy, perhaps you would like to come up with the Taro Patch SOP (standard operating procedure)-- rules on what goes where in this forum. Then, of course, we need to know what repercussions will occur if the regulations are breached...banned for a day? Second occurrence, banned for a week? Third strike and you are out? Oh, and then we need performance evaluations...so the person knows how close they have come to following the rules and regulations. Of course, before that, we need to have performance standards and then we've got to determine who the performance rating official will be. Then there has to be incentives for excellent performance....a day off with pay? A bonus in your paycheck? A Commander's Coin? Even better, we can structure it after an ISO 9001 or QS 9000 system..design authority, control of changes/revisions; calibration, customer feedback; servicing and after market follow-up.

Yeah, you right jwn. I apologize for acting like a popoki. But sheesh...jus' press.
But, now that I think about it and I am still in my popoki mood...why is it when wahines disagree, da kanes start thinking "meow", but when kanes disagree, it is a logical, scientific, physicist/engineer kine discussion.
I do promise that henceforth, I will be more careful and make a studied consideration about which category I post my questions and thoughts.

Anything is possible.
Here is my take. Slack key guitar is Hawaiian music so I never felt the need to have a separate forum dedicated specifically to slack key. Admittedly, this forum is very broad. For simplicity sake, I figured one category would need to take on this broader all-encompassing function. Taropatch.net started with a slack key focus so slack key guitar naturally became the one.
I hear what you are saying, however. On the other hand, I am not really getting a sense of a consensus on what's the favored way to go. |

As a guitar player, I'll go along with Nancy on this one. This section of the forum covers a very wide range of topics (even before threads get hi-jacked) and sometimes I just want info on Slack Key Guitar or musical technique, without the extras of general Hawaiian Music History and language.
I don't know much of the language, so I'm usually at a lost with what's being said in some of the postings. I know I can learn the language, but I'm too busy making music at this time.
Playing Slack Key Guitar is probably the closest I'll ever get to Hawaii, since I doubt if I'll ever be able to afford traveling there.

Okay...now I something to say. It was I who emailed (ADMIN) Andy...About the passing of Uncle Sol Kawaihoa. For your information, UNCLE SOLOMON KAWAIHOA IS! ALL ABOUT HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR/HAWAIIAN MUSIC!!!!!! It was I who asked (ADMIN)Andy if he could let our TaroPatch Ohana know what had happened. Myself, Andy, Sarah, Reid, Keith and others from TaroPatch have played slack key, and sang many Hawaiian Slack Key Music together with Uncle Solomon Kawaihoa. This was always the first point of contact. "SO BACK-OFF!!!!"
"Andy I am really sorry to have been the source of the unrest here on This Topic. It was never meant to create such a conflict of interest. And the distasteful remarks? The replys and responses have really killed the joy I use to feel everytime I came here. I agree...Everyone's entitled to their own opinions...But can say they have sat down really...with a "Slack Key Legend"...Who was also a very close friend and Wonderful "Kumu." Well that is how felt about Uncle Solomon Kawaihoa..He is and always will be all about "HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR/HAWAIIAN MUSIC" Mahalo Andy for fulfilling my request and I am very sorry for creating a problem."
