Aloha,
Just picked up this album and it is fantastic. Gabby's playing is incredible and his voice is as soulful as it gets. You can tell he's just in the studio and playing, because most of the song are preceded with the title and Gabby saying, "Take 1" or "Take 2." I always find that kind of fun.
The one question I have though is...the liners don't credit any musicians and, of course, Gabby is playing slack key (from the sound of the "takes" solo) but...to my ear I feel like I hear a bass and occassionally a ukelele. Perhaps, I am just getting confused because of Gabby's ("can't be just one player")playing, but I was wondering if anybody knew?
Mahalo.

That would be Danny Stewart on the `ukulele and Sonny Nicholas on bass.

The "Pure Gabby" venue is the Central Union Church hall, and the recording was done with a three-track remote setup. For all the background and notes, look for the original LP release, which also includes one disk of Dave Guard talking to Gabby--there's usually a copy or two on eBay at any given time. In addition, the Dancing Cat site has extensive notes for the album in the usual Winston/Junker complete-data style: http://www.dancingcat.com/notes/PureGabby.php

The interview by Dave Guard, is included on Gabby's THE KING OF SLACK KEY CD. Liner notes state:
A true collector's item, featuring Hawai`i's favorite son & cultural treasure -- Gabby Pahinui. This CD includes excerpts from a 1961 interview of Gabby by The Kingston Trio's Hawai`i-born Dave Guard. Liner notes include text of the 1978 Hawai`i House of Representatives' resolution commending Gabby Pahinui for his outstanding contribution to music in Hawai`i. |
