First off, 2 apologies -- 1) I couldn't find the previous topic and 2) posting much later than previous discussion.
I waited a long time to listen to the new Mt. Apple IZ release - maybe because I didn't want to be disappointed, maybe because, well, IZ is so special.... but I finally did.
I want to encourage anyone "on the fence" to get this CD and give it a good listening to. Most of it is very beautiful. The "E Ku'u Morning Dew," brought tears to my eyes, which hasn't happened for a while.
But don't judge it based on IZ's recordings, or any other external standards. This is a highly produced album, something I usually don't like, but, IMHO, Jon de Mellop did a great job of bringing out the heart of each of those songs, with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions,(but that might be a matter of taste.)
My suggestion is to "just listen" to each song without playing the role of the critic. I was lucky to be able to do that, and I was rewarded with a very beautiful and heartfelt experience. Since then I've listened to the CD a half a dozen times and still love it.
PS. My 11 month old son sat transfized, listening to almost 4 full cuts without hardly any moving around -- and I didn't try to get him to do that. He was just crawling around, stopped crawling and paid attention to the speakers. Not the kind of "review" that makes the papers, but maybe one that IZ would get a smile from.

Raymond- by the way -- let us know how the wee lad is doing. What has you life been like since he came to you? What cute things has he done? What horror stories about diaper changes or midnight walks around the house with him at your shoulder? Oh, and this upcoming Christmas should really be fun! |

I too, had not seen the previous discussion...we had dropped off of radar during the summer music season in Colorado... but felt compelled to comment... my braddah...really he's my real braddah--and who ain't been to Hawai'i yet--and who listens to me rave about the Islands...he played Ku'u Morning Dew off the Iz orchestrated cd just this Sunday...first time I'd heard it.
I hear hints of the textures of "Days of Future Passed" by the Moody Blues... another "experimental" album. I expect one or two of these cuts will turn up in movies and etc... and hopefully benefit the ohana of Iz. Like any great art, Iz's voice and songs should extend beyond any of our lives. The imagination of de Mello's orchestrations creates a new wave to share the legacy of Iz.. Is it natural or cheating? It would be cheating future generations to not allow imaginative use and extension of the gifts of Iz. I like what I've heard so far...goin' to "buy it now"...but not on ebay!

Gregg - you write a fine review. You consider all the elements and comment upon them honestly and professionally. I like your writing style. Thanks for sharing. Seems like just about everyone I have talked to feels the same way about "I ke Alo o Iesu". And you are right...we do still have Iz in slippahs on other recordings. |
