Just checkin' to see if I am the only slacker in Florida. I live in Satellite Beach which is the furthest north on the mainland where you can sling a hammock between majestic coconut palms and enjoy the cool winters of the subtropics. I am a Haole boy, but a Hawaiian at heart. Over the last few years I have met George Kahumoku, Daniel Ho, and Keola Beamer. I model my playing after Ray Kane, Dennis Kamakahi, Ozzie Katoni, Keola Beamer, and most recently have started playing John Cruz tunes from his newest album One of These Days. I am an intermediate slacker and can play songs like Ray Kane's Wai'anae Slack Key Hula and Ozzie Katani's Ku'u Kika Kahiko note for note. Don't know yet if I possess enough mana to consider myself a true slack key player but I hope to one day.

Huh?? Might have to explain that one!
E komo mai Oe. Welcome to the patch. I have also spent some time in Satellite beach, at least passing through to the south gate of Cape Canaveral Air Force Base, on the way to KSC. Lived in nearby Coco Beach, too. I was young and we were launching men in rockets to the moon at the time, but it seems so long ago now. Does the Satellite Inn still exist, and does it have the Bar with the windows into the swimming "mermaid" pool?

Hey Lawrence, alot has probably changed in Brevard since the "I Dream of Jeannie daze". I am a Geographer by profession and the definition of sub-tropic you must be able to grow a coconut palm from seedling to a reproducing adult palm. We use to get periodic freezes in Brevard but we have not since '89. Everywhere along our beach communtiy now you can view coconut trees some upwards of 40'. It is as beautiful as Florida gets here with out all the South Florida congestion. My friends dad used to launch rockets too. His name is John Rooks. You guys are the pioneers of the space coast. Much respect. No more Satellite Beach Inn unless your speaking of the Days Inn next to the Pineda (404) causeway.

I went to Coco Beach one time. There were little towelettes in the hotel room for wiping the tar or oil or whatever black sticky stuff was all over the beach. We went to visit Kennedy Space Center and then on a cruise. What an extraordinary tour that was...saw eagle nests and the crawler thingie that they move the shuttle on; saw a shuttle on the launch pad (from very far away) and saw a "rocket garden". Way cool place (except that it was HOT! Ahi wela. Melted my lipstick in my luggage. Always put your lipstick in a ziploc. :-( |

Spent a few days in Orlando and have the mandatory RonJon T-Shirt and decals.
Come by and play with the SCSKS on your next trip to San Diego. I have been working on Ku'u Kika Kahiko but it is not "performance ready". |

Aloha nui! Pehea 'oe? I just wanted to tell you that I wish you luck in your slack key playing. It's always nice to find people on the East Coast that love Hawai'i Nei. Hope you enjoy yourself on taropatch.

I see, but I am much further north of you here at latitiude 38, SF bay area, and my neighbor has two palm trees that are just the right distance apart to sling a hammock! (they used to have four trees, but cut down two for no good reason)

Coconut Trees(cocos nucifera)do not grow in California. I thought we were here to talk about Hawaiian music?

Yes, I guess these trees were some sort of date-palm, thanks for the clarification, I am not much of a tree expert.

And anything else related, such as stringing hammocks between palm trees!
A subject you brought up , and a good place to play slack-key, if you don't mind playing while lying down.
No worries, there is plenty of time for talk about Music and there are lots of discussions about music going on all the time. As a new poster, you probably know that you should also scan the archives for any subjects of interest. You can get some good answers and possibly some more ideas for questions this way.
It is also sometimes fun to re-engage in some of these old topics by posting against an old thread with some new thought or wrinkle.
After all, TaroPatch is a discussion Forum, so nothing is wrong with chatting.
