Two questions about this song for anyone who can answer:

1. I’d appreciate if anyone could help me locate lyrics for “`Ike Ia Ladana,” which is sung beautifully by Dennis Kamakahi on his CD “`Ohana.” The words and music are by Lili`uokalani.

Unfortunately, the words do not appear in the liner notes with this disc.

They are also absent from “He Mele Aloha” and “The Queen’s Songbook,” both of which mention that these words are intended to be sung to the tune of “The Queen’s Jubilee.”

I also came up dry on the other usual sources—huapala.org, tropicalstormhawaii.com, Google.

Can anyone provide the words to this lovely song or offer suggestions where else to search?

2. Dennis plays this song in C Mauna Loa tuning, tuned down to Ab. I tried playing along in G taropatch with capo on the first fret and it sounded OK (in tune), but when I tuned my guitar down to match Dennis's, I got a completely different, really lush sound, especially with vocals.

But good golly those strings are loose. I mean, I know this is slack key, but ... well, my question is whether anyone here has experience tuning the instrument down this low and if there are tricks to avoid increased string buzzing (flopping, really).

Many thanks.

Easiest way to cope with tuning way down is to bump string gauge up a notch or two--if you've been using lights, go to mediums, and so on. You only need to change the strings affected by the tune-down--though, of course, if the whole set is being slacked down a step or two, the whole set needs to be changed. I do this for guitars that I know will stay in a particular tuning--my old, delicate parlor instruments that will stay in taropatch for a while wear extra-lights with light-gauge E-A-Es.

Here are the words I have. I know there are some spelling errors, but I haven't had time to go through and correct them.

'Ike Ia Ladana

2.

I wrote to Uncle Dennis once about a year ago regarding this song...it is so hauntingly beautiful. He told me that the only place to get the music for it is in the research library at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. He said it has not been published anywhere. I'll see if I still have the e-mail he sent and I'll forward it to you.

Me ke aloha

I will be spending many afternoons next week in the Bishop Museum archives. Let me know if I should bring back a copy of this song.

I musta deleted the e-mail. I cannot find it. A month or so ago I went crazy deleting old stuff and that musta have been one of them. E kala mai.

When you go to Bishop Museum Archives, need to wear white cotton gloves. No licking your finger and turning the pages.

But what an amazing place that is. I could spend weeks and weeks there. I was amazed by all the kahili in the room with all the monarchs' pictures. And the surf boards they have -- they are HUGE. I do not know how someone could even carry them.

I know. I've been there many times. I can safely say that Betty, Charlie, and DeSoto are thoroughly sick of me by now.

It is not the usual place for tourists to hang out. But then I am not the usual tourist.

Many of the songs in my books are photocopies of material from the archives. They are really quite invaluable as most contain translations and historical annotations by Kimo Alama Keaulana (affectionately known as "Uncle Treasure Chest"). Regrettably, material from the archives is for personal use only and may not be posted publicly or included in a professional recording artist's liner notes. But if somebody needs a lyric sheet and is not going to Hawai`i anytime soon, I am more than happy to get the copy and send it to them in lieu of a postcard.
