Aloha oukou, hardest part about being a Hawaiian at heart is the language barrier. Does anyone have the Hawaiian lyrics to He 'Ai No Kalani sung by Dennis Kamakahi off the Ohana CD?
Respect, Justin

Justin:
You might find it in the Queen's (Lili'uokalani) Songbook. It was referenced being on page 118 in that publication according to the Dancing Cat website. - Maggie |

Justin-
The words are as follows:
He `Ai Na Ka Lani,
Ke `ai nei `o ka lani, Hämau `oukou läkou nei a`e. Mai noho a pane a`e, Ua kapu `ë ka `aha i ke ali`i.
Chorus: `Ai ë, `ai lä.
Ke `ai nei `o ka lani, I ka `oene i ke kalo mana, Lawea mai e ka ipo laua`e O ka uka `iu`iu o Lanihuli.
Ke `ai nei `o ka lani, I ka poi `ai lehua, Ho`owali `ia e ka ipo hïnano, Maika`i he pahe`e ke moni aku.
Ke `ai nei `o ka lani, I ka `opae mähikihiki, Ki`ina `ia e Fancy Lauli`i O ka ua Tuahine o Mänoa.
Ke `ai nei `o ka lani, I ka i`a a he a`ukü Hi`i `ia mai e ka ipo `aukai, `Au`au ehu kai o ka moana.
As Maggie said, you can find a transcription in “The Queen’s Songbook.” They also give a translation which I assume must be copyrighted, so I haven’t written down here, but I would welcome Andy’s opinion on posting a recent translation of a song whose original lyrics are in the public domain.
Here is my poor attempt at rendering the first verse and chorus.
The royal chief is eating. Hush you (all) who are nearby. Don’t sit and talk. The court is sacred before the chief.
Chorus: Eat, eat. (Mangia! Mangia!)
Suffice it to say that the chief gets to eat mana taro, red poi, shrimp and swordfish.

Justin -
There is an earlier version by Dennis with the Sons of Hawai`i and a really great version by Brother Noland and Tony Conjugacion.
You may find other versions under this song's alternate title "Ke `Ai Nei."

Mike, thanks so much for those lyrics. Taro Patch is an amazing resource. The melody of He 'Ai No Kalani really captured me, now I can share the ALOHA of this mele with others.

Aloha Bill, Justin and all da kanaka,
I have loved this song as far back as high school. thanks for the words. now I can make da music here in Seattle. Jack is an up-and-coming steel player and it will add to his kani. Plus the fact it is alive and this is the style I play here. Plenty old kin for the folks.

Hey jack -
Come down for UkeFest & we can do a set together. Don't know if I'll do this song, tho (he said, vainly trying not to hijack the thread...)

Gee, 35 years ago they was gonna Hijack The Starship. Now, it's only threads that get hijacked. Back then, my threads was mostly denim, and flannels, some with grease stains and puka's. Had one T from Socrate's Cave, but it eventually said rate's ave, and went to the fix the car rags. Nobody ever hijacked'em,but Wanda made me throw some away 'cause of the puka's. Paul |
