Hi all,
I just wanted to tell ally'all that I updated my photo in my profile. The new one shows me with Kili Mawae. We're waiting to catch the ferry back to Lahaina, and Kili and his nephew were at the ferry terminal.
Kili is da kine!
aloha, Keith

Hey Keith,
I've heard Kili's name many times but never knew what he looked like. I even made it to Kili's street but no Kili.
Looks like Kili and mini-Kili. Thanks for the photo. |

i realized that some folks may not know of Kili Mawae. he's the honorary mayor of kaunakakai (politically, all of moloka'i is in maui county, and the mayor is the honorable charmaine tavares). kili is very much old school slack key - his music has a driving bass line and beautiful ornamentation with the melody on the high notes.
kili regularly plays at the saturday market in kaunakakai and collects tips. he then gives the money a needy family.
kevin brown has more kili stories than you can imagine - each one better than the other. i heard a new one last trip. so, kili won the first slack key competition held when milton lau took the concert to kaunakakai (it was a great show - hearing the MC say "hey, moloka'i is now one of the major islands!" was so nice). anyway, kili was sweating which song to play for the competition, so he asks kevin to listen to a few. this is after lunch, and after several songs, kevin nods off. but then, at one point, kevin wakes up and says "hey, kili! that's the one. that's the song you have to play at the competition!" kili said "hah? you went ho'onanaea on me, how do you know?" and kevin replied "no, kili. i heard them. this is the song you need to play at the competition." the rest is history...
kili has a CD now, by the way - i got mine at the guest shop at the moloka'i inn.
aloha, keith
