Please listen to I Waipi`o on the following at Auntie Maria's web site: http://www.mele.com/music/artist/keoki+kahumoku/hula+big+island+style/

I really like this mele I Waipi`o by Kainani Kahaunaele but cannot find lyrics on huapala.org. No lyrics on liner notes.
Mahalo.

Kainani writes her own songs (though I don't know if she wrote this one). She's also friend of Keola Donaghy, who posts here from time to time.

What she is singing in the clip is this (I haven't heard the rest of the song):

Ua 'ike makou
I na nalu e po'i mai nei
I Waipi'o

Ke kuakea
E komo mai nei i ka nuku o ke kahawai
A'o Waipi'o

All of which is loosely interpretable as:

We have seen
The waves breaking
At Waipi'o

The whitecaps
Coming into the mouth of the river
Of Waipi'o

aloha,
Sarah

Sarah - thank you so much. Too bad you don't have the rest of the mele. It is really a swell, well-varied assortment of music. Try listen Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua on there. What a voice that guy has! It is the most beautiful rendtion of that song I have ever heard (although Mike Ka`awa is pretty swell too).

PS: good thing you translated it, because I thought she was saying Puakea and I couldn't figure out the meaning. Later on in the song she says something that sounds to my ear (after years of machine shop & industrial sewing noise) like shoot mailei, but I have no idea what that could be. That is why I was searching for the lyrics.

Mahalo once again, Sarah.

Me ke aloha
Malama pono,
Wanda
