As I may have mentioned previously, I wrote to Hawai`i Magazine to urge them to become an innovator and pay honor to the Hawaiian language by using the `okina and kahako.
They are planning to do so. I think that is wonderful.
Here is what the editor said in an e-mail to me:
We are planning to start including okina and kahako with our new redesign, starting with out Jan/Feb 08 issue--if we can get the typographical issues straightened out. Not all commercial fonts include diacriticals and many of the specialized fonts aren't adaptable for our uses.
I helped transition HONOLULU Magazine to diacriticals in 1988, so we know it can be done, but we will have to educate our readers why are we doing so, because it will look strange at first to them.

True to their word, the Jan/Feb 2008 issue of the magazine has an article explaining the `okina and the kahako, reasons for using them, history of using them in written language and what the magazine is doing about use and proper spelling of Hawaiian words.
I am impressed and pleased that a company that makes its money from Hawaiian culture is paying the proper respect to the language.
You can get most of the articles on line at: www.hawaiimagazine.com.
Article each month about music. This month it is about Bruddah Iz. There are also some maganificent photos which have won prizes in their photo contest. I think Kalalau Valley is about one of the prettiest plaes on earth. No wonder Uncle Dennis felt compelled to praise the place in song.
Thank you Hawai`i Magazine. |

The following is my humble opinion only. A positive move for Hawaii magazine. HOWEVER, the current rendition of Hawaii magazine is a serious tradeoff. I have subscribed for years and thought the previous owners had achieved a prety well-balanced (between tourist stuff and meaningful discussion) publication. I used to anxiously await each issue and came to expect well written articles about many different aspects of Hawaii and Hawaiian culture (self-determination, language, music, overdevelopment and so on).
I viewed moving the effort to Hawaii as a positive step and I applauded their attempts to get local works into the pub (including using local musicians in the advertisements - David Kahiapo, Uncle Cyril and so on). Nonetheless, the current version (new ownership) is little more than a slick publicity piece put out by, it seems, the Hawaii Visitors bureau. Count the ads; they are everywhere, full page, half page, helicopter rides, zip lines, atv adventures. A recent issue had 12 pages, yes 12, on that traditional Hawaiian pasttime - GOLF. Little else in that issue was more than a couple of paragraphs and nothing more than a cursory overview. Think they'd ever do 12 pages on Hawaiian Music? Not a chance. I wrote a letter to the editor expressing my concern, but they chose not to print it.
I can get this kind of stuff for free (with coupons) at the luggage pickup in the airports. Having diacriticals in full page ads for day spas doesn't work for me. Just because it's about Hawaii, doesn't make it good. I'm voting with my dollars and not renewing my subscription. |

I wholeheartedly agree, Terry, and did not my renew my subscription which expired with the last issue. The new magazine reeks much worse of commercialism than the old one ever did.

I think Hawai'i Airlines' Hana Hou! is really good, head and shoulders above other airline publications. And you guys might be interested in reading about what we east coasters are up to in an article titled The Big Pineapple. BTW, the online version omitted a photo of Bill Wynne and other musicians and dancers at a workshop by Chadwick Pang, UH Manoa Hawaiian Music Ensemble instructor. |

That's neat, Andy. It looks like Lynette's, Kimo's, Lisette's, Ryan's, and the other's (including yours), work is paying off. Looking at the pic was kinda fun. Hey, I know that guy!

Good article, Andy. I agree that Hana Hou produces surprisingly good articles for an airline publication. The author of this article is Nate Chinen, whom I was in the Penn Hawai`i Club with, and who is an esteemed jazz critic for The New York Times. |
