I just listened to the newest cd by Na Pali (2005), and heard Fred Lunt playing Steel. It reminded me of Feet Rogers, so I did a google on Fred, but only came up with two more recording references. The first Na Pali cd "Pacific Tunings" and the compilation cd "Hawaiian Steel". I also found out that he was, in fact, a student of the Rogers clan. I can't believe that he is only on these three cd's. Does anyone have a "discography" for Fred Lunt?

I believe that Fred played steel with Taj Mahal's Hula Blues band. Check out "Hanapepe Dream", it's one of my favorites!

Fred Lunt was the steel guitar instructor at the Aloha Music Camp February 2006 on Molokai. Yes, he knew the Rogers family intimately, and it was great fun studying with him. I'm not sure of CD's he recorded on.

I am sure Mark will shortly pipe up.

He is also on Taj Mahal's "Sacred Island" cd. Lots of good cuts on this one, too.

Fred has the touch, doesn't he?

As Julie says, he taught steel at the Feb 06 Aloha Camp, and then came back with his family to take classes in June! He'll be back in the near future, too.

He's under-appreciated and under-recorded as far as I'm concerned. He's on the Na Pali CDs, and the Hula Blues CDs, a 1996 compilation called "Hawaiian Steel" and (I think) also on Pat Cocket's CD "Kupaianaha."

BTW: He's easy to find, since he's a big deal realtor on Oahu: http://www.fredlunt.com/. I'll bet he'd throw in a lesson if you bought a home.

BTW- he's also a terrific slack key player.

Thanks Maria and Mark. John Yamasato (Lead Vocals with Pure Heart) sells real estate also. Wonder who else? Maybe they should get together and form a "House" band. You are right Mark, I thought his work on the "Na Pali" cd was top notch.

I first met him when we played together for a memorial on the beach. He had one battery operated amp. He is one of the most humblest men I ever met. It was pure pleasure to play with him that day. He told me that Feet was his teacher. And he toured with Taj Mahal. Taj lived on Kaua'i for a while and he got to know the band that Fred played in. Fred also played with his band for Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion when they broadcasted from Hawaii.

My ears always perk up a little when I hear a Steel Guitar played with the same feeling and expressiveness that Feet had. Fred has that same touch. It made me smile when I heard it, and to know now that Feet is being "channeled" by artists like Fred Lunt, it makes me smile even more.

Fred Lunt was one of David Feets Rogers students the others being Bobby Ingano and Feet's nephew, who is also a Rogers. These three students carry on the Rogers tuning and the master's touch and would make Feet proud if he was alive today.

Bobby was not a student of Feet he sez, but Feet was a mentor in more ways than one, and would give him hell when he needed it
Bobby plays in C13th with a G on the top string, and seldom uses other tunings. Anyone can ask him, he is great to talk story.
