Aloha kakou,
I wanted to know if there is any difference between the words keiki and kamali'i. I am pretty sure that if you split the word kamali'i into two words, it would translate as little child. Pololei keia? Is one used for younger children and the other for older ones? Please let me know!

If I remember right. Kama was sort of a contraction of kama'aina and kama'aina is like child of the land. Li'i means little or young as a child. Therefore kamali'i is a little child of the land. Keiki is plain Hawaiian for child. Also a poetic way of saying it would be keiki o ka 'aina and that could apply to almost any age of person. So I am a keiki o ka 'aina but I'm too old to be a kamali'i. Any way that's how I see it. But there may be other interpretations out there. Oh yeah kamal'i is also only used in the plural like the word children. To add to the confusion kamali'i with kahako over the second A means royal child so one must take care in the pronunciation. |

I found the definition of both Keiki and Kamali'i in the online dictionary which I use all the time which is http://www.wehewehe.org There is a difference between the two.
Keiki: means child, offspring, descendant, progeny, boy, youngster, son, lad, nephew, son of a dear friend; calf, colt, kid, cub; worker, shoot or sucker as of taro; to have or obtain a child; to become a child
Kamali'i: means children, progency (only used in the plural)
