After going to the latest Ki Ko'alu festival at Kapiolani Park in August, I sought out Ozzie and committed to lessons. Having never played guitar prior, had to go find a new instrument and then started lessons in September. Picked up a Yamaha steel string to learn on, and as progress comes have plans to see what will fit and sound the best in a year or so.
Am moving along rapidly with Ki Ko'alu. Am fortunate to have played keyboard for many years, so the fingers all are doing much of what they are supposed to.
Spend a lot of time getting the finger technique and movement down, so the results in this is now having it come like water over a waterfall.
Am fortunate to live here in Hawaii and have people around me who are masters to emulate.
Have a wonderful day!

Welcome Rich,
Lots of good learning support to be found here.
One small correction: It's Ki Ho'alu... not Ki Ko'alu.
Ki Ko'alu might mean something in Hawaiian, but maybe not what you want!

Aloha! I hope to hear you play ki ho'alu when you feel ready to share some mele with us.
I know I don't own this board, but may I still suggest that corrections like this be made privately or just let go? We knew what he meant, yes?
E kala mai. Just want everyone to be as friendly to others as possible. Not ho'oponopono-ing people is something I'm working on too. 'A'ole pilikia. We all do it without thinking sometimes, yeah? |

Big fingers end up in the wrong spot! Have a hard time clearing notes sometimes too on the neck.
Was in a hurry this AM, wanted to drop a note to say Aloha to all on the forum. |

Rich from Waipahu - welcome to Taro Patch. Definitely lucky you live O`ahu so you can find such a swell teacher.
You will find the folks here on Taro Patch to be a friendly and helpful bunch of folks. The epople here love Hawaiian music and Hawaiian culture and dance and history and language and food and on and on.....
Thank you for joining in the disucssion on the Super Ferry. You can see there has been plenty of discussion from we mainlanders, but little from the perspective of one who lives in the Islands. I appreciate your point of view. You bring up many points I never thought of.
Don't worry about typing boo-boos. Like Bruddah Iz said on one of his CDs, "big fingersr, small keys...OUCH".
Welcome and aloha to you from Cleveland, Ohio, 40-some degrees and gray and colorless. |

Thanks for the welcome from Cleveland, the land I originally came from to Hawaii.
My connection with Hawaii goes back to the late 50's when a family member was posted here serving in the Marines.
So from that it started. I can blame my brother for bringing me here cause of letters and pictures to home from Hawaii, specially to a little kine kid with big imagination in freezing winter!
So with slack key search I found this forum. Now, like a sponge, sucking up all the info that I can. Living here has the music played in so many settings that you'd have to be living with a cork in you ears not to hear it.
