Aloha:
Anybody see the small blurb about TaroPatch.net in the current February issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine? It's the one with George Harrison on the cover. It's in the sidebar column called "News" under "Cybernotes."

Brace yourselves, there's more coming. I just got an assignment to do an "On the Web" piece on Hawaiian music for AG's June issue. So be on your best behavior--I'm watching and taking notes. And you in the back row--I *saw* that.

I'm braced and trying to decide which row I want to sit in.... definitely the back row! Cool Russell! Thanks for the heads up and let us know if we may be of any assistance. |

I've compiled a scratch list of URLs (pulled from my own bookmarks file) from which I'll select the ones to cover in the article. I'd welcome any suggestions for others.
Sorry the URLs aren't formatted as live links--I haven't figured how to transfer them as HTML from my bookmarks file and don't have the time now to do it manually. Anyhow, go to
http://www.cloudnet.com/~rletson/Hawaiiana.html
There's no link from the rest of my site, so you'll have to go there direct.
Thanks.

Russell,
That's a really good resource in itself. But how come no www.TaroPatch.net :-)?

Right now, http://www.ronlooslackkey.com seems to be a " Future Home of a Dotster Registered Domain".

Aloha Russell,
Checked your list of Hawaiian music sites on the web. One site that I do check often, because I also play some Hawaiian steel guitar, is http://www.hsga.org/ the website of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association. It features a lot of information about equipment and tunings, lively discussions on the bulletin board, and is updated regularly. Granted, most of it concerns electric steels, but there are acoustic players on it too. And while I got your ear (or your eye), I have to say that AG is the only guitar magazine I read faithfully every month from cover to cover. That may seem strange coming from someone like me who has playing strictly kiho`alu for years. Yes, AG has had articles on slack key (few and far between), and I enjoy the gear reviews, but the main reason I read it is to get inspired. Learning about artists and how they relate to their music, what motivates them, and ultimately what inspires them is universal, whether you play slack key or the bouzouki. It always helps to inspire me. Sometimes people will ask me what guitarists have been the biggest influence on my playing. People who know I only play kiho`alu are always surprised when I tell them Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. Hendrix taught me that there are no rules and no boundaries when it comes to guitar playing, and from Santana I learned the power music has in moving people and shaping their emotions. Take off the blinders, sometimes thinking outside the Hawaiian music/slack key box has its benefits.
play on, kamalu |

Sarah, I just checked (I clicked on the link in your post actually!) and it works. Make sure you put two 'k's in slackkey.
