My most favorite Christmas CD is Leon Redbone's "Christmas Island".

Is it not Hawaiian, of course, and has mainly Christmas standards
like "White Christmas", but Leon's warm baritone carries many of
the tunes very well and his tongue-in-cheek humor with Dr. John
on "Frosty the Snowman" is delightful. The title number has made
us want to visit Christmas Island at Christmas someday. There are
actually two Christmas Islands, one below Hawaii controlled by the
U.S. and another near Indonesia controlled by Australia. We will
go to one of these at some Christmas time.

The brand new "Slack Key Christmas" compilation on Palm is also nice - nahenahe instrumentals, great for creating the Christmas mood. Sonny Lim, Jeff Peterson, James Kimo West, Randy Lorenzo, Charles Michael Brotman and more.

(I did a review of this disc, as well as Amy's wonderful CD, for the December Northwest Hawai`i Times, which hits the racks this weekend.)

I second Lawrence's vote for Leon Redbone's "Christmas Island"........it's probably the one we play the most at Christmas. It's so upbeat! Willie K. does a version on his CD but it's not as good as Leon's. On the Hawaiian side we also like Dancing Cat's "Kiho'alu Christmas" Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. And if you've got kids around, (or in our case, grandkids) then "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" narrated by Boris Karloff is a great CD.

Aloha,
John A.

Yes- temporarily forgot about those ones (there are two Dancing Cat Christmas CD's, if I remember correctly). These have the advantage of NOT having any words, so they make good background music while opening presents on Christmas Morning.

The two Dancing Cat Christmas discs (Ki Ho'alu Christmas #38037; Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas #38044) actually DO have vocal selections, like Dennis Kamakahi's "My Hawaiian Christmas" and "Christmas Memories," for example.

The two Dancing Cat CDs are excellent. I don't care for the new Palm collection. My favorite, however, genres aside, still remains "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (the original version, not the new one...it sounds like the aural equivalent of giving Pigpen a bath and putting him in a suit.)

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Ooops, your are right! (but they are mostly instrumental).

Also the Windham Hill "Winter Solstice" CD's (and I think there are two of these as well) are good instrumental background material.

My two favorite holiday CDs are The Carpenters' "A Christmas Portrait" and John Denver and the Muppet's "A Christmas Together." These go on the CD player when I start wrapping presents.

My favorite holiday CDs by Hawaiian artists are The Bros. Cazimero's "Cazimero Christmas Favorites" and Na Leo's "A Christmas Gift."

My favorite newer winter CD is Keola Beamer's "Ka Hikina O Ka Hau."

The song that makes me smile the most is John Keawe's Santa's Coming Over the Rainbow. We couldn't get him to sing it last week because he arrived at camp with a bad sore throat... So you need to listen to the CD.....

Na Leo - Christmas Gift and Christmas Gift 2

I just wanted to concur with you on Na Leo Pilimehana. I have just finished my second holiday-themed show in a row, so I have pulled out and listened to every Christmas LP, cassette, and CD from Hawai`i that I own. And "Christmas Gift" is the one that finally put me in the holiday spirit.

I cranked their "Ave Maria" to about 500 watts and it was suddenly Christmas in my house. Celtic Woman has nothing on these three.
