So I used the Windows sound recorder to record a song to send to a friend so he could learn the tune using the cheap mic that typically comes with PCs. After recording it, I tried to e-mail the file but it won't go because it says it's too big. Too big!? Something about the recipients PC not set to accept that large a file. I checked it out and it's a whopping 28mb.

Why is such a low tech recording such a large file?

Is there a way I can reduce the size of the file in order to send it?

I know this is more of computer tech question, but if any of you have any ideas, please share.

.

What? You mean high "E" is the TOP string. No way dude! That changes everything!

Windows Sound Recorder is an ancient (dating back to Windows 3.0 "Multimedia Extension" - http://toastytech.com/guis/win3mme.html) application that Microsoft seemingly treats as one of the toys they must preserve.

Anyway, Sound Recorder does not compress audio, so the WAV files it creates are going to seem pretty big compared to MP3s, even if they recorded at low-fidelity settings.

If you want to convert the WAV file to MP3, a utility like FreeRIP (http://www.freerip.com/) should make a much smaller file.

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) will give much better control over recording, and can be set to export to MP3, but takes some getting used to.

What a wonderful forum! Thanks for the info Charlie.

That brings up another question...can you use the regular cheap PC mic setup with audacity? Or do you need an interface to do that?

Kurt,
Before I switched to a Mac and garage band, I used Audacity. It's a free download that's easy to use and works good.
