My wife got me an early Christmas present, a subscription to Acoustic Guitar. What do I see on the cover? Unlock the Slack Key Style.

Turn to page 101, you'll find an article and arrangement by Fran Guidry! See Fran, I told you, "You're my idol." Way to go!

I get this mag, but I don't have this one yet. What's the issue date?

Very nice simple, cumulative building, intro to the style. What we would do without parallel 6ths and 3rds when arranging?

Dusty, you are too much. Always funny. Do you have a library of all that stuff ready to hand?

You can refer to Mr. Dusty (aka "who John Keawe looks like") as RETRO SLACK after his masterful performance of "retro" style slack key -- he played several "old school" Ray Kane tunes (last night at Open Mic) in a row with only one mistake -- yes, I did see you look up to see if we noticed. Without the parallel 3rds/6ths Dusty's playing would have caused tears. With them he is an ace!!!

I can vouch that RETRO SLACK has a 'million zingers" that hit yer funny bone when you least expect it and with maximum impact.

As I've mentioned before on this board, Fran helped me to get started in Slack Key. In August of 2004 I attended a workshop given by Ray Kane, and Fran was there, too. Ray blew through a few pieces and I was totally lost. I was forelorn and clueless, but the next day at the Slack Key concert on Oahu I saw Fran and he showed me a few things and pointed me towards Ozzies book. And the rest, as they say, is history...now I am living the dream taking lessons from Ozzie and have even played slack in front of a live audience a few times.

One of the best things about this style is the friends you make and the offers of help you get. Seems like we're all just one big happy Ohana.

Mahalo, everyone!

Gordon, I'm pretty sure they have medication for Solo Chat Room Syndrome, but the side effects ...

I guess having a slack key woodshed column and a review of "He`eia" under one cover is as close as we are likely to get to a Hawaiian focused issue of AG Mag, but if we keep plugging away, who knows.

Thanks for the kind words,
Fran

Congrats Fran,

I do not as yet have this issue of AG, but I think Keola Beamer, Ozzie Kotani and Patrick Landeza's articles and music were also foci for Slack Key. I look forward to reading your column.

Dave, I don't think Ozzie has gotten a column or article yet, at least he didn't mention it when spoke to him at the workshop at Mission City and asked if I could recommend him to AG Mag. I felt really honored knowing that I was following Keola and Patrick, that's for sure.
