Before I introduce myself, which of you is that cute guy I met touring the Kamaka Ukulele factory in Honolulu about 3 weeks ago? Are you the guy in this picture??? Come on now, confess... http://www.hawaiitravelnewsletter.com/music/kamaka-factory-6412.htm
OK now for my introduction. My name is Kathie Fry, I live in Venice Beach California and I love traditional Hawaiian music, including slack key guitar, Hawaiian ukulele, and falsetto singing. I have a guitar, and it's a very nice one, but it's a classical with nylon strings, so I've never really played slack key guitar myself. But I would love to! I fly to Honolulu every couple of months - my parents live there - and on my last trip I bought a beautiful Kamaka tenor ukulele. A couple of weeks ago I took a ukulele lesson from Steve Rose at McCabes Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, to give my ukulele playing a kick start (I love that place!). I also skate, but that's a whole other story...
Nice to meet you everybody!

Really! Interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks Fran! Actually I'm more looking for an excuse to buy a new guitar LOL. If I could hook up with someone in Southern California to get me started playing slack key style that would be all the excuse I need. Mahalo,

Kathy, Auntie Nancy (Pua Kai) lives very close to you and can get you connected. Send her an email (from the members list) if she doesn't chime in soon. There is also the Southern California Slack Key Society (SCSKS). We have a weekly Open Microphone on Tuesday evenings in Oceanside (bit of a drive for you). Also, Mitch is producing the Southern California Slack Key Festival very near to you next month and there are still tickets available. Lots of the "Masters" will be in LA and SD to teach and conduct workshops along with the concert. http://www.socalslackkeyfest.com/
I prefer to play many slack key songs on my nylon string guitar. I like the timbre better than my steel string for some songs and I enjoy the diversity. |

OMG Mike, I am leaving home in a few minutes to drive down to Carlsbad. Maybe I'll run into you at the grocery store! (I have long brown hair and I'm wearing a hot pink sweater today ). I'm spending the rest of the holidays with a friend who lives in Carlsbad, and I actually get down that way fairly often. Thanks for the Auntie Nancy tip, I'll be sure to contact her after the holidays if she doesn't see my post. Pleasure to meet you!

Welcome to the 'patch. Slack those nylon strings and enjoy. Lots of folks use nylon at least part of the time. Some even use electric. No rules, just right. Of course, any excuse to buy another guitar is a good one. Guitar aquisition Syndrome is one of the few maladies we can enjoy, and don't need to see the Dr. about. Paul |

Aloha nui! E komo mai!
Another person to contact, maybe, would be Keith, or Kili as I call him in Hawaiian, from La Jolla. I've never met him in person, but I've e-mailed him and talked to him on the phone. He seems to be super sweet. Tell him 'Alika sent you.
So you like falsetto, eh? Please send me an e-mail. I'd like to send you a recording of me singing "'Alika." Yes, that's right. "'Alika!" Hope you like it.

Aloha e Kathie! Here I am! Sorry I didn't read this sooner. We had a small gathering here in Manhattan Beach yesterday. Dusty and Sheila came up from Valley Center, Dick and Linda from Long Beach, Doug from Anaheim, and Scott from WLA... There was some really beautiful music being played. Dick, Scott and I try to get together fairly often to practice, compare notes etc. Hopefully you are coming to the SoCalSlackkeyFest.com here at the Performing Arts Center in Redondo Beach Sunday Jan 20th. Check out the thread of "meet the artists" too. The performers will all be up at Duke's in Malibu from 6 - 10 Sat 19th. The price is $40/person. At first glance this seems expensive, but actually, it is Duke's standard cost for the buffet dinner you will be enjoying along with the delightful entertainers' presence. When I first came here, I found Keith Marzullo playing down in Encinitas and met several others that day. Rik Nieves gave me terrific lessons (for free!) to get me started. SCSKS (Southern California Slack Key Society) is a very fancy name for a very loose association of friends who enjoy slack key and are in various stages of learning it. There are some truly fabulous musicians among them, and then they've more than welcomed me as I struggle to learn while enjoying the journey. It is a bit difficult to go south on Tuesday nights for the open mic at Kaisen's in Oceanside on Tuesday nights. When I do go, I either talk Dick and Linda into going so we can carpool, or leave early in the afternoon and find someplace to shop or hang out along the way (that can be very expensive - I assume you've found Buffalo Bros in Carlsbad). So feel free to contact me and come on over with your guitar when you have a chance. I'm retired and welcome any opportunity to stop weeding my garden. You don't even need to get on the fwy to get here! Aloha no, auntie nancy PS: my phone number is listed - go to Switchboard.com |

Aloha e Kathie! I saw you at Kamaka's last year December! Awesome tour. I enjoyed your company and hope to see you (and your friend) again. Thanks for calling me cute I sometimes get down to Nancy's for a jam. I am glad you found us and I hope that our meeting at Kamaka's is only the beginning of something larger and more meaningful. I am not sure if I tried to email you yet or not. I look forward to seeing more of you here at the patch. Welina.........hele mai |

Kathie, I saw a female skater zip north on the Coast Highway by Swami's in Encinitas the other day. Was that you? We also have a local, VERY LARGE, ukulele gathering each week in Encinitas at a pizza parlor (50-100 ukulele enthusiasts) that we call a KANIKAPIZZA on Wednesday nights. Let me know if you are interested and I'll give you the details. |

Hello again Mike! No, unfortunately that was not me because I have not yet figured out where to skate in North San Diego County (although I have been down there many weekends recently and I always have at least 4 pairs of skates in the trunk of my car). Still looking for paved trails, but if that search fails you probably *will* see me skating in the streets soon.
I am very interested in learning more about that Wednesday ukulele Jam in Encinitas, and actually slack key or ukulele jams anywhere in Southern California. I won't be able to make them every week, since I live in Venice Beach, but I will sure to attend all of them at one time or another.
To everybody else who responded, thank you so much and very nice to meet you! Just FYI everybody, I'll be in Honolulu from this afternoon through Tuesday (January 19-22). I'll be listening to George Kuo, Aaron Mahi, and Martin Pahinui at the Moana Terrace of the Marriott Waikiki Hotel Sunday night, so if anybody will also be in HNL on Sunday January 20 I would love to meet you there. Look for a girl with shoulder length brown hair and a big smile on her face. And please don't be shy about introducing yourself!
