I have been playing in two different tunings now for 8 years: Taro Patch G and G6th.

In Taro Patch G, I have found that I rarely play the low D string... for the type of music I play, I just don't go down there. On the other hand, there are many times that I find myself wishing I could switch from G to G6th in the middle of a song.

So - I finally did it. I yanked the heavy low D off my steel and replaced it with a copy of my middle D string. Then I tuned that string up to E.
My tuning is now: E-G-D-G-B-D

Oh, the Rapture! Now I can get those lovely Hawaiian 6th chords by grabbing that E with my thumb, and can still get my beloved Taro Patch Steel sound with the rest of the strings.

Should have done it a few years ago. What a treat!
Aloha,
-Konabob

I#699;ve been playing slack key guitar and #699;ukulele for several years, and just love slide guitar, but cannot find any learning resources. Where did you first learn, if not by family?

I got a few tips from Ken Emerson once, and got to spend a few days around Bob Brozman, But mostly I loved the sound so much, I couldn't put it down, and have just learned a lot of stuff by experimentation. I have never tried to duplicate Ken's style or Bob's style. I have been teaching at Keoki Kahumoku's Hawaiian Music Camps. If you ever get a chance to come out here to the islands, I would be more than happy to help you get started on the steel. You can also download a little 13 page booklet I have put together: http://www.konaweb.com/konabob/intro.pdf

Let me know if you have any questions.

Konabob- back in my Bluegrass days, I came across the EBDGBD variant for Dobro, tuning the low G down to E. Mike Auldridge used it for "Greensleeves".

Kyle- any relation to Gary Medeiros, aka Falsetto2002 here in the 'patch?

I've been getting good feedback from folks concerning my beginners tutorial page included on pg. 4 of my Hawaiian Steel Guitar Events web site. www.hwnsge.5u.com
It's my meager attempt at passing along the basics that I learned from Jerry Byrd in hopes that those starting off will do so on the proper footing to allow the student to progress as far as humanly possible without the bad habits that can come from not having a very good teacher. If a good teacher cannot be had, do yourself a great favor and invest in Jerry's teaching video and book course(w/CDs), you'll not regret it!
Lot's of bad habit players are in the Hall of Fame, well known, and rich, so anything is possible, but to get the most out of your instrument, a few impoprtant details should be followed and then learn everything else by everybody else.

Have fun!

Back in the 70's, I knew several Dobro players who had 7 string SohBro's (Shot Jackson). They all put an E on the high (7th) string. It gives you a nice relative minot chord.
