While Keola Beamer's Grammy-nominated classical album is lovely, he -- and everyone who has heard it -- agrees that its inclusion in the "Hawaiian Music Album" category for a Grammy, was odd. He did not submit it, BTW.
Now he's stepped up to the plate, publicly stating that he will not be participating in any Grammy stuffs. This, from today's Maui News: http://www.mauinews.com/news/2008/1/5/02keob0105.html

Although Keola should have several Grammys by now for his past records, this is a classical record. I commend Keola for the courage and integrity to support the other nominees. I think I own every book, DVD, and record Keola has made, purchased lessons and tablature from his web site, and started playing ki ho'alu because of his music. I continue to be a huge fan! |

I applaud him for taking a controversial stand. It is precisely in this way that integrity can be brought to the awards process and to make winning a Grammy really mean something.

I was wondering if Keola would make that move, and I think while it may be controversial for some folks, it is the right thing to do. There is that "I" word again. Integrity.
Question about the Grammys. Are only recent recordings nominated? What is the time frame? What about re-releases?

To answer your questions:
1. Must have been released within the Grammy guideline dates (one year, but I think it's September-to-September, as opposed to calendar-year).
2. For now, it's new releases only.

What I want to know is --- who submitted the album for consideration in that category, apparently without Keola's permission? Dancing Cat? If so, how much of the blame would fall on George Winston's shoulders? (It doesn't seem like the kind of thing he would have done.)
Auntie Maria is correct: the eligibility period is October 1 to September 30. |

Awards should be taken with a grain of salt. We do have a tendency to place too much importance on things like achievement awards. While they usually do recognize excellence in the artists and their work the awarders tend to get a little arrogant and lose touch with the original goals of such things.Their apparent apparent ignorance of things beyond their own little worlds is indicated by Keola's nomination at this time. |
