HAWAIIAN GRAMMY NOMINEE PERFORMANCES at BORDERS STORES THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA:
Tia Carerre will be performing songs from her CD, Hawaiiana, with slack key guitar / `ukulele accompaniment by Daniel Ho. Keoki Kahumoku will performing songs from the CD, Treasures of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.

Lunch breaks don’t get better than this! I attended today’s free “Hawaiian Grammy Nominees in Concert” at Borders Bookstore, Union Square, San Francisco. I was expecting to see Daniel Ho, Keoki Kahumoku, and Tia Carrere as originally billed. And yes, I admit it, I wanted to see Tia Carrere live . . . to hear her singing of course!
However, when I got there, to my surprise Uncle Cyril Pahinui was doing a sound check. The others were running on Hawaiian time. Uncle Cyril opened the show and played four songs in his trademark Atta’s C tuning: “Makee ‘Ailana,” “Ka Makani Ka’ili Aloha,” “Hi’ilawe,” and “He’eia.” What can I say, he gives me chicken skin when he plays, especially “Hi’ilawe.”
Next came Keoki with Daniel Ho and another surprise, Herb Ohta, Jr. Keoki played in Taropatch and Daniel and Herb accompanied him on ukuleles. They played “Kanaka WaiWai,” “Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai,” “Five More Minutes,” and “Hunt’n Brown Dog.” A beautiful young hula dancer from the Big Island, Nani Edgar (?), danced to “Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai.” Keoki mentioned that Nani’s Mom couldn’t make the trip and graciously sent her daughter for this tour. Keoki joked that Nani was “playing hookie.” I think Nani danced to another song but can’t remember it off hand. Keoki, Daniel, and Herb are always entertaining, and Keoki is just an awesome singer and funny storyteller, just like his dad, Uncle George Kahumoku, Jr.
Tia Carrere closed the show and was accompanied by Daniel on either slack key guitar, standard tuned guitar, or ukulele. Tia sang “Aloha ‘Oe,” “Pupu Hinuhinu,” “He Aloha Mele,” “Sing” (Carpenters cover), and “Listen to the Music” (Doobie Brothers cover). Nani danced beautifully to the first two songs. Tia is the real deal--she has a beautiful voice, has wonderful stage presence, and sang both the Hawaiian and pop songs very well. Daniel’s instrumental backup was a perfect accompaniment to Tia’s singing, as it showcased Tia’s voice, but added sweet background, rhythm, transitions, and an occasional pa’ani. You’ll know what I mean if you listen to her album (recommended), which Daniel produced and plays on. As many of you know, Daniel is an extremely talented, versatile, and gifted musician.
For the finale, everyone joined in on “Hawai’i Aloha.” The concert was about 1-1/2 hrs. long, much longer than I expected. The only bummer was I had to go back to work. Some of the Taropatch folks I saw were, Genaro, Allan, Ray, and Sue (whom I just met). The musicians are heading down to Southern Cal tomorrow and will be attending the Grammys on Sunday. Definitely try to catch them at their other Borders’ appearances this week.
Mahalo to all the musicians, event coordinators, Borders, and Outrigger Hotels (they sent up orchid leis which were given to all of us in the audience).

Diana and I saw this same show at Borders in Sacramento on Tues. night. What a great show and the leis were a really nice touch. The best show I have seen at Borders and the biggest attendance ever. To all you other TaroPatchers out there, don't miss this one if they come your way. Aloha, Jerry |

Aloha e Doug,
Nani and mom Sylvia (Puanani) Edgar live in Ventura and are very active within the hula community. Also, Dad/Hubby Lowell is a firefighter, slack key and ukulele player. Maybe can dig up some pix of them for you.
I think I'll be going to Costa Mesa tonight, and for sure to Torrance on Saturday.
For any kumu hula out there, I still think that 5 More Minutes would be an excellent dance. Or did she dance to that? Puanani is a very creative kumu hula choreographer.
wcerto - - these performances are at bookstores like Borders who carry their CDs... out here there is a fairly large Hawaiian section in most stores, not sure about back east.

| Borders out here maybe scrapes up some local talent who is happy not to get paid, happy to get free kope, but who is a nobody -- no recordings, just an ordinary schmoe. Some of them don't even have music any more. |

Went to the performance in Costa Mesa last night and ran into Mitch Chang, Auntie Nancy (aka Pua Kai), and Bill and Vickie Benzell. Those of you that missed it -- YOU MISSED IT! 
Daniel Ho has purchased two complete sets of the new Bose L1 performance loudspeakers and set them up in stereo. MAN!!!! When Cyril played, I almost felt like I was swimming somewhere inside his guitar and he was singing into my ear. I could hear every sigh, finger scratch, and harmonic overtone. It really gave all the performers a fighting chance to really shine! The 150 or so casual shoppers and us die-hards were treated to a very RARE experience -- ABSOLUTELY TOP-NOTCH Hawaiian Music from some of the current best -- live and in technicolor (for those of you Tia Carrerre fans -- she's much better in person).  
You still have one more chance in Torrance tonight.
OH I ALMOST FORGOT (AND THE SCOT IN ME WILL NEVER FORGIVE ME) -- IT IS TOTALLY AND ABSOLUTELY FREEEEEEEE!

Yup, terrific performances.... Eh Mike - you forgot Nani and Puanani dancing for us! And Lowell was there too, helping out all 'round including putting away all those cords 'n' stuff. And tomorrow at Torrance, Tia will have her 2 yr old daughter, for whom she recorded this album.
It was good to see and hear Herb too.
A thought that came to some of us: Keoki and Tia: how about teaming up to sing Ku`u Lei Awapuhi together? Easy thought - as Tia sang into the mic, Keoki was behind in the stacks, singing with his eyes closed....
Since Mike doesn't get out much, he didn't realize just how many "die-hard" fans were there... we see them at Whittier, we saw them in Redondo Beach; we even saw them at the Mauian...
I especially liked the long performance from deep in his heart that Cyril started off the show.
