I had the same problem when I used Acrylic nails. I took a long time for my nails to grow back. Never again for me. However the glue that I use from "Guitarplayernails.com" Doesn't seem to harm the nail. If one does come off, which happens when your nails grow" my natural nail is a little soft for a day but by the next day it's as good as new.

Mike, I haven't actually tried Guitar Players Nails; I'm just passing along some info from another discussion. Since I use fingerpicks, I haven't seen a real need for them on guitar. On banjo, I play domnward against the back of the nail, and fingerpick don't tend to work well, so I considered the Players Nails for that. Not really a recomendation, more of a report that some others have used them. I'll try to find a link to the discussion.

Edit: Wow. There's 4 pages of topics regarding finger picks. This may take longer than I thought.

Just to add to the endorsements of guitarplayer nails again.
I was moving my office today into another area. I had my hands in solvent, strong floor cleaner, water and soap, and I banged my nails around pretty good. As a result, one nail survived, one came off and one was not fixable. I do three fingers BTW. They do not have a death grip on the real nails and come off easily within a few weeks or if they are abused. I just dig into a corner, lift and it starts peeling away without any trauma.

I realy needed good nails today.
I have two guitars at home loaned out for trial, and because I have to have them back tomorrow, it was important to play them well with good nails.

When I got home I had my nails back in perfect condition within a half hour. A few days before that I filed one too close and replaced it to fix my error. You can't do this with real nails! These things give total freedom from disasters and worry.

I evaluated the guitars tonight, no problem.
One of them happens to be an unsold (new) '02 Matin OMC-18VLJ and my goodness that thing is strong and vibrant for a small guitar! I dont think its going back...I may even pay for it too

Just to be clear, my wife told me that her acrylic nails are not "glued" on. They do thin the nail, and then apply layers of liquid acrylic (fiberglass) to build up thickness. Then, for tune ups, they fill in behind where the natural nail has grown out. No superglue since there is nothing to glue on. The old glue on nails have kind of gone by the way side. However, I am interested in the guitarplayer nails and will give them a try.

I'm holding out...
yet, many great players seem to be using acrylics...
but the filing and weakening of the natural nail does not appeal to my need to keep decay at normal accellerando/decline ( I think I'm approaching warp)...

A super fingerstyle player was coaching me a couple years ago, and he was gonna take me to a nail specialist...
but then I thought about the followups--if I miss, do my princess nails turn into "eye of newt/toe of frog?"

I guess I'm not ready to be anyone's "nail buddie"...yet.
I'm waiting for digital nails or the next breakthrough...
or maybe I'll continue to be almost mediocre.
But when I do go forth...it's through the front door, nail buddie or not.

But the person doing it needs to know and work on good guitar players...
"We're musicians...back off"!
Anyway, The papparazzi don't seem that interested.

Y'all worry too much. Go to Longs and buy some over the counter fake nails. They come with superglue. Glue em on and trim them to the desired length. They're much better than a acrylic build-up in terms of sound.
If you want to get fancy, and get a killer sound, get some ping pong balls. Take a sharp knife and cut one in half. Get a pair of toenail clippers, (big) and 'clip out' some half moon chunks of the ping pong ball. Glue these (superglue) to the ends of your fingernails.

I'm here to help.........

I'm thinking if a little is good, a lot is better. Gonna try gluing the whole ping pong ball to each finger...

Tried that already

I ended up with "gecko fingertips" <<--what a mental image!
The percussion effects were tremendous!!
Strumming and gecko-style raseguedo was a piece of cake but that dang FINGERSTYLE had me whooped!

Actually have used portions of the ping pong ball to repair a split pointer fingernail but the super glue I was using wouldn't keep the ping pong ball material "glued" for more that a few days so I grew tired of the experiment. The sound quality was excellent though.

The paper from which good old Lipton tea bags are fabricated is a good supply to use to fix split or cracked nails. Simply paint on clear nail polish; lay the appropriate sized piece of tea bag paper on top of the crack and then paint on top of that. Ask Podagee. He probably has done similar on cars when painting them. The fibrous structure of the tea bag paper reinforces the nails and the clear nail lacquer hardens and strengthens even further. The tea bag paper is relatively flexible as well and can be used on any contour. I think some companies sell official manicure repair paper, but all it is is cheap old tea bag paper. You could even dry out your used tea bags and save the paper (after you have recylced the contents thereof, naturally.)

They must don't teach boys this kinda stuff. Sheesh.

BTW

I ordered yesterday the guitarplayersnails from earlier in this thread. Hoping they work out. I play a lot of resonator guitar (58-17 strings) and usually use metal fingerpicks. I've never been as adept with those things as I am fingernails. Fingernails on those gauge strings get trashed in a few minutes. I'll see if these things I ordered hold up a little better.

Cheers
