Using the supplied "pipettes" to apply the glue is the only way to go--it would be vey hard to use glue straight from the bottle and I would not recommend trying it.

I started with plastic and 1 layer of fibergalss but have since backed off to just plastic. I get a softer tone and the application is down to 15-20 minuites (three nails). I usually finish with a thin "clear-coat" of glue to make my nails tranparent again instead of looking frosty from filing. This is easy using the pipettes.

The whole kit cost $20 and will do approx 40 nials. So that is $20 for about 1 years worth of nails. Cheap enough? It is also a product you can apply at home by yourself. These are the advatages over acrylic; cost, convinience, and the ability to do emergency repairs just before playing.

I think those that can get beyond a few stumbles in the begining will soon recognize that they have just made an improvement. When you realize that, it is hard to go back!

That is TOO true. That stuff is so thin you would end up gluing all of your fingers together! I had a used pipettes in the baggie that I pulled out to reuse. I pulled the glue ball off the end and some glue sprayed between my finger and thumb INSTANTLY gluing them together. I will say that without the fiber glass mesh, longevity is sacrificed. The plastic is too fragile. After a number of tries, and practice, they look pretty good to me. The real purpose of the mesh is to add an even layer of glue for added thickness and strength.

That mesh does the same thing as the tea bag paper I spoke of earlier to do repairs to cracks/splits in your nails. Does the same thing as a fiberglass mesh does when doing work on a boat or Corvette or something.

Kidding aside, the nail kit from guitarplayer works great. Hope some of you fellow nail biters will try them.

Mike

PS: I can believe the tea bag material works. The fiberglass mesh serves only to spread thin layers of superglue for creating strength. Toilet paper would probably work also.

That material, the fiberglass, where could one get it in bulk?
(never mind, turns out they sell it by the foot at guitarplayernails.com)

Anybody else have positive results?

ahhh ... yes... remember that song well!

Lacy things, the wife is missin'
Didn't ask, her permission
I'm wearin' her clothes
Her silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

In the store, there's a teddy
Little straps, like spaghetti
It holds me so tight
Like handcuffs at night
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

In the office there's a guy named Melvin,
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown
He'll say, "Are you ready?" I'll say, "Whoa Man!"
"Let's wait until our wives are out of town!"

Later on, if you wanna
We can dress, like Madonna
Put on some eyeshade
And join the parade
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

Lacy things- missin'
Didn't ask- permission
Wearin' her clothes
Silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

I heard that classic classical guitarists used ping pong balls to enhance their nails. They would cut em to size and glue them on. Does any body notice the intonation change on the strings re: natural versus fake nails. If so, do you like/dislike the sound?

I've used both the fiberglass and a ping pong ball when I cracked a nail and had a gig that night or the next. I can tell the difference in sound on my classical guitars, and I don't like it. You pretty much have to use the material on all your nails or you will hear and feel the difference.

Also - superglue will, in the long run, harm your nails and therefore make them worse than they are. When I used a patch for an emergency, I took the stuff off right after the gig. Nasty stuff.

In about 10 years of playing, I think I had about 4 nails crack, and I have to admit that each time it happened I was getting sloppy with nail care. They don't have to bee very long, just shaped correctly. There have been a few discussions on this topic in the past.

Gentlemen: Please do not forget that super glue is cyanoacrylate. I know one of our `ohana here is a chemistry kumu, but to me cyanate = HCN = cyanide = poison.

Here is MSDS: http://www.chess.cornell.edu/safety/manual/msds/sprglue.htm

That's why when you use it on your nails you get such a killer tone.

For CAC to be "poisonous" it needs to remain in an active state. As we all know, from experience, it does not stay there very long.

What about all those chicks (and some "roosters") that like to puff their lips with "BoTox"? Botulism Toxin. Thought about trying that on my fingers, but then decided that gluing ping pong balls was as effective (perhaps less risky).

When I've spilled super glue on me, I keep a bottle of dihydrogen monoxide under the medicine cabinet. It works pretty well , but be careful not to spill it on untreated metal due to its corrosive effects.

Cheers
