I was a little concerned when we spotted the heavy rain forecast for the Big Island and Hawaii area...has it passed?

I can tell you it is raining too much here in Cleveland, but I guess rain is better than snow. They said had all our rain been snow instead we would have had about 30" of snow. Rivers are flooding all around here. Good thing we live up a hill, but our basement is wet. Bummer for Paul and the shop vac.

I see that Ferry has not been going to Maui because of the rough seas. What is going on with surfing? Is it too rough for surfing?

Last weekend brought torrential (and in some cases, damaging) rains to Hawai`i island and Kaua`i. Three solid days here on Kauai's northshore, varying from downpours to holycr*p kine rain. Power went out just 4 minutes before start of Super Bowl...but kicked back on about 30-40 minutes later. Flooding in Hanapepe and Waimea town...even Hilo folks were taken by surprise.

Kaua`i rains had lessened by Monday afternoon, but Hawai`i island and O`ahu are bracing for another hit today. This all-islands doppler loop can be adjusted for each island -- or viewed as the whole chain:

As for surfing, here on Kaua`i it's been kinda sloppy due to accompanying winds -- but the water's nasty-brown, so not a good idea to be in it anyway.

Kane`ohe (Windward O`ahu) has gotten a lot of rain. We got dumped on on Tuesday when I was out holo-holoing with Mom, Grandma, and Aunty. Town side on Monday was wet in the morning, but dried out nicely in the afternoon. Yesterday was nice town side. I'm headed back to rainy and cold Seattle today. Sigh. (I know, I know, I not gettin' any sympathy here!)

Don't worry - I cleaned up the mess...er, I mean...da hale!

I couldn't go this time, largely because I am in the middle of taking classes - but I had activities almost every night while she was away (and they continue upon her return: Led & Mike on Friday, two kanikapila & a symphony concert Saturday, SUPA on Sunday...)

Howzit, Momi, you KNOW it rains just about EVERY morning in Kaneohe! ;o) And that's from someone who was raised in He'eia and Kailua!

My wife and I were there next door in Kailua for three weeks and just returned a few days ago. We had mostly nice weather...cool and breezy....68-69 in the AM and mid to high 70's later when the sun came out. That was nice as we were there for the sad task of getting Carol's family home ready to put on the market. Her dad passed away last October (her mom passed away a couple of years ago) and the kids (7 of them) are scattered all over. We painted inside and out, replaced front door and screen door, kitchen counters and did a few other minor repairs. We stayed in it while we were doing all the work. The home had it's first open house Sunday and it looks like it's possibly sold......two solid non-contingent offers higher than the asking price anyway. We think Mom & Dad would have been proud of what was done and to see the way their home was presented. It was very sad to lock the doors for perhaps the last time and hand the keys to the realtor.

Have a smooth trip back to Seattle!

Aloha,
John A.

Mahalo for the thoughts!

The rains took me back to small-kid time, living with my Nana (tutu wahine). Power would go out, we would huddle around the kerosene lamp and watch the lightneing flash. Maybe three, four days of downpour ranging from "can't see across the schoolyard" to "can't see the front yard!" Then it would clear and Poli`ahu's kihei would be spread out over Mauna Kea! How beautiful!

Those were also the times when our rainy-day school "uniform" was a large garbage bag with puka cut in the bottom for the head, and in the corners for the arms. Carry da zori in your hand so they don't get swept away by the water when you cross the street. Put 'em on when you get to school. (Oh, yeah - Boys roll up da pant leg an' girls tuck da mu`umu`u up in da panty! Put 'em back down when you put on da zori!)

Anyway, I'm currently collecting ancient chants describing weather patterns of Hilo. Here is my translation of one. This is not an authoritative translation. Just my own practice. If Keola knows the chant and would like to comment, it would be appreciated!

Malama pono,
Leilehua

KEA`AU SHELTERS, WAIAKEA LIES IN THE CALM

Kea`au shelters, Waiakea lies in the calm,
Dwelling in the great peace of Hanakahi.
Hilo, pulled this way and that, swims in the sea
Between Point Lele`iwi and Cape Makahanaloa

Like a poi-pounding board is Hilo, sitting down
Entirely encompassed is Hilo by a screen of rain
Sharp the tooth of the rain of Hilo from Heaven
Furrowed is Hilo, trenched by the waters

Like rough seas, like broken waves, is the rain of Hilo
Snapped and twisted becomes the forest.
Wavelike, streaming, overflows the Wailuku River
The mouth overflows and the bank is flooded

Mud-reddened water of Rainbow Falls
A huge roar from the water of Kolopulepule Stream
Thundering and beating
Smoke-like mist rises
Besieged by the drenching rains, Heaven opens wide

Hilo is black, dark in the rain
Hilo ruffles its feathers in the cold
The great rains cling to Hilo.

Like a cliff stand the woods of Haili
The palisade of `ohi`a trees is raked aside
As if by a warrior’s killing rope,
The woody rampart, the forest of Pa`ie`ie

My lehua people in the center of Mokaulele Forest
With the shattered branches, a bundle on the back of Hala`i Hill in the rain
Looking for the calm of Hanakahi
Hilo reaches out, my dark sea reaches out

At Lele`iwi, my heaping, roiling sea in a Northwestern wind
An ancient lei, a lei of waves surrounding
Look to Pu`u`eo! To the stone ridges seaward!
At Punahoa, danger! Stand, I stand at Waiakea!

Here's a video report from Hilo:

The shot of it whirpooling down the storm drain is pretty cool!

Leilehua, thank you for sharing the beautiful chant. I will think of it the next time I get stuck in a downpour (even though it's likely to be in Seattle, not Hilo).
