So my neighbor down the street had this really cool black metal case by his mailbox with a sign that said "FREE". It looked as if it would accommodate my Fry Pan, long enough and slender enough. Had great foam padding, too, so I threw it in the back of my car.
I took it home and it was slightly longer than necessary but I thought I could tolerate that. It was a pretty good candidate for air travel. I could carve the Fry Pan shape out of the foam and be ready to go.
UNTIL!!!!
I looked at the case closely and noticed it was a GUN GUARD. Oops. I don't suppose I could dance through the airport carrying a gun case.
DUH!
So the Goodwill will get a guncase deposited on its doorstep the next time it opens its Donation Station. I guess it pays to pay attention, but how was I to know? I don't play with guns...

Can you cover the "Gun Guard" logo with food-related bumper stickers? "Got Spam," etc? They'll have to open it up, but around here, they'd probably get a laugh out of it. |

If you are going to put it in your checked luggage you would have no trouble getting it on a plane. Hunters travel with shotguns and rifles all the time using gun cases, as long as they are put in checked baggage. |

I recently brought a civil war era gun on United, a family heirloom. It was in a case checked into baggage and I had no problem. |

To go along with the above, when I was in Laredo TX last spring I saw three Americans who had been hunting in Mexico put an arsenal of high powered rifles in gun cases and ship them aboard their flight north. No problem with security at all.

Well, we do have an organization here in Santa Cruz named "Guitars, not Guns". I had thought about getting several of their stickers and putting them all over the case.
Trouble is, I don't want to part with my Fry Pan if I don't have to, I was hoping to bring it on board the flight.

As long as you allow them to open the case, there should not be a problem. TSA has gotten much more reasonable in the last few years. Malama pono, and good luck with your new case! Leilehua |

TSA might not be the pronlem -- bring the big case onto the airplane might be an issue with the airline. I know I recently had trouble with United. |

I use a generic case for a breakdown shotgun. It does'nt say gun on it Lap steels fit very well in it. They are available at gun stores. Sortof like turnings swords into plowshares. Travel was nice for me and my dreadnaught though. I got a TRIC case and gate checking and overhead inside on PNW airlines was no problem. The gate checking to clarify what i just said was with Aloha airlines and the prop jobs of Island Air to Moloka'i. If you smile and ask nicely some times you get all you need. |

A used gun case will probably retain small amounts of the burnt gunpowder, and may cause airport or other security devices to react in a most unpleasant manner. I handled the cartriges from a 21 gun salute last week, and could smell the powder even after washing my hands.A new case would be fine, but it would be best to leave the used one for firearms. Yeah,
I actually considered putting the Fry Pan in its vintage case into the gun case, but still think I'm asking for trouble. Somewhere, someone is going to have a hair-you-know-where, and raise the alarm.
My neighbor told me he used to use it for his shotgun, but hated to have to break it down in order to get it into the case. OK, so much for that thing!
I might take my Silver Hawaiian instead, that fits into a great baritone ukulele case I have.

One of our local heroes, Tim O'Brien, likes to perform, travel and create with a Bazooki. A long-neck pseudo octave mandolin-like creature with a guitarish body. But at the airport, when they ask, "What's that you carryin' boy?", you tellum'...why that's a SPECIAL geetar. Otherwise, you be in airport for awhile talkin' story. Where's that Goodwill Julie? Can I fit my Goodall, my uke and a couple fiddles in special case? And maybe a Bazooki. "Bazooki", of course is from the new Greek, meaning, "Mighty Crazy Wind". And if your fingers smoke when you play...more trouble. Luckily, I'm no threat there... Me more of a Sloth-Key picker.

How frequent are 21 gun salutes? Is it a bad thing, or a good thing? How do I get one without, well...you know... Do they give fiddlers 21 gun salutes? Can I be there? I wanna be there vertical and hear it ya see. Is it given because I stopped playing?
