Amy Stillman recommended this recording as very good reference material for any serious student of Hawaiian musical history. This CD provides 75 minutes of a wide variety of historically significant mele done by a very accomplished choral group. There are plenty of chants and hula olapa. You can hear Kawika done pure and unadorned. You can hear how the missionaries and their himeni influenced Hawaiian music -- how the oli transitioned into hymns, how multi-part harmony was used and how the music metamorphosed into what we have today. The language , words and pronunciation are correct. Dr. Stillman attests to the accuracy of `olelo and mo`olelo. She said the record is available from Auntie Maria. http://www.mele.com/music/artist/the+rose+ensemble/na+mele+hawai%60i/ Also, you may want to visit the Rose Choral web site at: http://www.roseensemble.org/recordings/hawaii.html
This is an important recording to obtain.

And I've learned that there are more than just a few connections between the CD, and this beautiful island of Kaua`i where I reside. One of the solo female performers was born/raised here -- a Sueoka from Koloa (as in "Sueoka's Store" there!).

Smaller still: Kim is related to Kelly, who was alaka`i with the halau in Seattle that I joined back in 1999. (To this day, on the rare occasions I dance, her influence still resides within me.) |

It is indeed a small world. For example, first time Paul & I visited Hawai`i was on a cruise (NCL). They had a guy on there to lecture about Hawaiian culture. He was very good and very knowledgeable. Only Paul & I and another couple went to listen to him the first day. Then we told everyone we saw about the great lecturer. Next day more people, who told more people, who told more people. By the end of the week, they had to hold his lectures in the movie theater, there were so many who wanted to hear him. His name is Wayne Chang. He `unikied with Robert Cazimero, Mapuana de Silva and Vickie Holt Takamine. He is Aunty Mapu's hula brother. He is the reason I fell in love with Hawaiian culture, and here is Mapu in Cleveland teaching hula and she knows Wayne very well. I think that is definitely a small world. |

Wayne is a bundle. Could he give an entire lecture without a cig? |

Actually, Wayne managed to get through all the shipboard lectures without smoking. He may have been jonesing for one, but he never let on while we were there. And we kept him overtime with questions. Maybe he quit smoking? Paul |
