I found a great way to remove a Pearse Arm Rest and wanted to pass it along.
I read that waxed floss would pass through/under the contact tape and cleanly remove the rest--and sure enough, it did!
I started at one end, pulling the floss up towards the rest, and "sawed" it through between the rest and the guitar top. I had it off in about a minute.
I was definitely nervous because I was doing this on a brand new Martin LJ. It went through the contact tape and slid over the laquer finish without leaving a single mark. The top is still perfect!

Now I need to remove traces of contact glue from the laquered finish. Does anyone have a suggestion for a safe solvent or cleaner?

Bob, since (if) the guitar finish is nitro, you are basically gonna destroy it with any obvious solvent. Try mechanical means first: I have found that if you rub "contact" cement with your finger, it tends to roll up into little balls that can be removed. Tedious, though. Sometimes, baby oil can do it, depending.

I don't know what Martin's current practice is with regards to finish on that model. If it is polyurethane, or any other cross-linked plastic, you could use most any solvent, including the acetone in nail polish remover. Scary, though.

Bob,
There is a product that I use with my paint work that will safely remove any sticky substance from any surface and is harmless to all finishes. This product is a paint prep solvent called "Acryli-clean" and is made by PPG; it is available at any automotive paint supplier. I have used this solvent on many guitars and have never nad a problem. Dupont has a similar product called "Prepsol"
Good Luck, Jerry

I've also found that a white plastic polymer drafting eraser works well too. They are made by Pentel and some other brands that I don't remember. Unlike those pink pencil erasers, it has no abrasive in it. It's available in the drafting supply section of just about any office supply store.

Aloha,

I have two drafting erasers sitting right in front of me as I type. I am going try rubbing first then maybe the eraser. Since I have to run out to get the solvent I will save that for if I still a problem.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Nice to hear that dental floss is being used by my fellow TPers. You can use it on your teeth also, but only on the ones you want to keep.

That's prety funny! I wonder if it would also work as a temporary broken string replacement in a pinch?

My luthier told me to use lighter fluid on my nitro finished guitar. Dampen a lint free cloth, use light strokes, no problem.

Glide dental floss, the ichi ban of flosses, was always right next to duct tape as a quick and dirty (and sometime really lasting) repair on my sailboats, although not on sheets or anchor line. Fortunately I haven't had the opportunity to try it on the trawler.
