Nancy, was that free diving or SCUBA?

With tanks, you may have had time to notice- the best word to describe depths over 100 feet is BORING! Not enough light for much life. The real action is at about 35 feet. After 32 years of SCUBA, I never go below 60 feet any more. What is the point? Generally I actually prefer free diving- you can move a lot faster without all that equipment.

I understand about the power of the whales. My best whale moment was when a mother humpback surfaced about five feet from my Kayak as I was paddling of Honopue valley, her calf nestled above her flipper on the far side from me. It seemed she was taking her calf to see the human. She looked me in the eye and I felt this awesome power- impossible to describe if you haven't experienced it. Almost like she was in my mind- this deep peace washed over me. She gently slipped into the water, tipping her tail so it wouldn't hit my kayak- it was as wide as my kayak was long. I thought the swirl from her massive body going underwater might flip my boat, but it didn't worry me. March 19, 1999- I will never forget that minute, that look, that feeling...

Chris,
You ever read the book "The Whale Rider" by the Maori author from Aotearoa, Witi Ihimera published in 1987? They made a movie in 2002. There are many moments in the book that you described and Witi goes into detail about the Maori legends and feelings about the Humpbacks. -- Chicken-Skin.

Haven't read the book but enjoyed the movie. Somehow the fiberglass whales didn't move me like the real thing, though!

It was with tanks and I was suprised at how much there was to see at that depth. We did not stay long just a kick to have the experence of doing it. Never thought i woud be able to and cerainaly not at my age. that and the fact that my diving buddy is my husband who is 13 years post triple by pass this dive was our celebration of his surgery annivesary. Now that is a real kick. We were supposed to be in Hawaii when he had to have his surgery but have never missed a trip since and have always done something special to celabrate being alive. This year it was starting to dive again. He used to be an instructor in the old days. Me I just like to look at da fishes.
I am jealous of your whale encounter. I think next year maybe Kayaking will be the adventure of the year. See lots of folks out in the Puako area.
