I stumbled upon the following web site: http://geology.com/waterfalls/hawaii.shtml
It has maps that you can zoom in on to find waterfalls in Hawai`i. Of course, the first I looked for were na wai ekolu -- Hina, Haha, and Mo`oloa. One distinctive thing I noticed from these maps is that Kaua`i has an abundance of waterfalls, more so than any of the other islands. I know it is the oldest of the islands. Is it simply because of Waialeale that there are more waterfalls on Kaua`i? Any other geological explanation for the phenomenon? That is why the Napali Coast is so beautifully "corrugated"??? Why hardly none on O`ahu? Do they "sewer" the rain water away?

The listing for the Hamakua coast is really weak. They do very well in the front of Waipi'o, showing almost every falls- even one that rarely flows! But none in the back of the valley, only two in Waimanu, none in the other valleys, and most notably none on the coast! I could easily add a hundred waterfalls on Kohala mountain even if I limited myself to those over 500 feet tall- 13 on my property alone...

Waiʻaleʻale definitely has a lot to do with the amount of waterfalls on Kauaʻi. Being one of if not the wettest spot on Earth, it supplies tons of water. Also because Kauaʻi is practically one giant shield volcano with water falling at the top, it flows down on all sides, unlike the other islands which are made of several different volcanoes. |

Just as a matter of clarification, Rev. Kamakahi was refering to Moloka'i, not Kauai, when he sang of na wai ekolu. "Fair-skinned woman in the bosom of Moloka'i." Paul |

I know that, buster. There were maps of all the islands. First I looked at Moloka`i, then I looked at other islands.
But, still, why not so many on O`ahu? |
