Yesterday, there was talk of evacuating Volcano, HI due to unsafe amounts of sulfur gases in smoke coming from Halemaumau. Today, she went and threw boulders over a 75-acre area and made what volcanologists thought was a 3.7 earthquake, but was really an explosion which created 100 ft. across crater. She must be looking for Kamapua`a. He better hide real well.

From Star Bulletin: http://starbulletin.com/2008/03/20/news/story02.html
Halemaumau blast sends boulders aloft
Hawaii researchers initially thought a quake had occurred
STORY SUMMARY »
Unlike Mount St. Helens, which famously blew its top in 1980, Hawaii's volcanoes are not typically the explosive type.

But Kilauea's Halemaumau Crater broke the mold yesterday with a blast so powerful it sent boulders flying over a 75-acre area.

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory initially thought the commotion was a 3.7-magnitude earthquake.

They determined later that pent-up gas pressure caused the explosion, creating a crater up to 100 feet across.

No lava was released in the blast, and there were no signs that an eruption of lava is likely to take place.

The article says the explosion was near a viewing area that has been closed for several weeks. Would that be the porch outside the dining room of Volcano House? As I recall, it looked out on Haleamaumau Crater.

Someone said or did the wrong thing!

Years ago I brought my brother in law, who used to drink, out to introduce him to madam Pele. The lava was pumping into the ocean near Kalapana from a huge tube, beautiful and quite accessable. We went to the edge and I made an offering, suggesting to my brother in law that he do the same. "Naw, I don't believe in this Pele s**t", he said, then turned towards the lava and yelled "F**K you, Pele!" I turned and started running as fast as I could. There was a huge explosion, and molten lava rained all around me. I turned to see if my brother in law was alive, and he was doing this amazing dance, dodging all the blobs of lava raining down around him.

"See, she didn't get me!", he said. Instant believer.

"Not yet, but she will". my friend said. Sure enough, by the time we got back to the car he had tripped and fallen dozens of times, totally shredding himself on the glass like lava. No one else had any problem. He was a bloody mess when we got home, and couldn't function for days.

I, however, got hit by one of the blobs of molten lava. I've been more careful who I bring to visit since then! Much to my surprise, it didn't really burn me like I would have expected- just a little redness. But it cut me pretty badly- the stuff is sharp! I still have the scar on my arm...

They are talking about the Halema'uma'u overlook, on the SE side of Halema'uma'u. This is accessible by a short trail from the S part of the Crater Rim drive...which has been closed from the Jaegger Museum to the Chain of Craters Road intersection for several weeks due to elevated sulfur dioxide levels.

The explosion (actually, the rocks that were thrown) took out part of the fence that kept visitors away from the crater edge, plus made some impressive impact craters in the viewing area. If you'd been in your car in the parking lot, you would have been 'only' pelted with thousands of rocks about 1/2 inch across...enough stones so that it's hard to see the stripes in the parking lot and road.

In this afternoon's "Breaking News" section of the Honolulu-Advertiser, comes news of yet another new spew yesterday -- this time, from Kilauea crater (the first since 1982):

I don't recall an eruption in the crater in 1982- there was a small outbreak down the rift that lasted less than a day.

Pretty exciting stuff! Wish I was on the island to check it out myself...

Creation. When you stand up on that mountain and survey the desolation, see sulfur powdering the ground, you get such a powerful feeling. It is not desolation and destruction, though. It is creation. It is new earth beginning. Pele may get all huhu, but she never fails to create. What awe I feel when I see a crack in that lava and a tiny fern starts peeking its way out of that crack. It is a metaphor for life -- there is always a little bit of heaven in any disaster area. There is always something new growing, something changing. Wow!

Swell pics, Nancy.

Try watch this hula from Halau o Kekuhi. Listen to the kumu, a very powerful lady, who is making certain the kahiko hula does not get lost by writing chants and choreographing new dances in the kahiko style.
