There has not been very much info available about Skippy, probably due to his untimely death. The few articles I have read speak to his talent and his beautiful singing voice, and his loving and kind heart.
Does anyone have more info about him. For instance, I happened to be flipping through the pictures in a book called Yesterday in Hawai`i: A Voyage Through Time by Scott C.S. Stone. One of the pictures was of Makaha Sons of Niihau and there is a picture of Skippy playing guitar. I did not know he played guitar. I thought only `ukulele and that only Jerome and Moon played guitar.
Some articles I have read said that Skippy had a voice more beautiful than Iz. Hard to imagine a more beautiful voice.
Can you imagine when that `ohana got together for holidays or birthdays or baby luau? Not only Iz and Skippy and sisters and parents, but Uncle Moe and all the other talented members of the Keale `ohana. Oh my.

yeah, skippy was BAD on the 12 string guitar. in fact i think a lot of my picking style from him, mike kaawa and some r. caz.
also i remember going to Hank's Place listening to them but because we were underage, skippy would make sure we didn't get caught, we sat on a table right next to him and he would keep his eyes on us.
i remember him as being a very kind, gentle and caring man. it was my privilege to play at his funeral with darrell lupenui. |
