Perhaps instead of piddling around with Turtle Bay, perhaps OHA should get involved in the airline business. Maybe take over the airline kind of like when the gov't bailed out the railroads. Then the money they make from it can be used for other OHA projects.

Here is the BIG question -- can a business be run in a pono way and still make a profit?

It would not appear there is any money to be made.

I mean... Let's look at what happened. As fuel costs continued to skyrocket, go! comes along and starts selling round-trip interisland hoppers for $19 when Hawaiian and Aloha are charging $179. Who could stay in business when the competition is doing that sort of kukae? As soon as go! puts Hawaiian out of business, then they will be a monopoly and start charging way more for these flights than Aloha or Hawaiian ever did. Gracias, Adam Smith.

Now looking for new way to get to Merrie Monarch. I wonder how many halau were affected?

Adam Smith didn't make the rules, he only described them. Some of us are old enough to remember when the govt made the rules for airline businesses. Few could afford to fly to Hawaii (or anywhere else for that matter). With deregulation, the likes of Southwest Airlines figured it out. Southwest competes with everyone in every market. Apparently, Aloha never did get it. Aloha was a mess before go! was even conceived. Look at the state of commuter airlines on the mainland; they are all moving to efficient short-haul regional jets and turbo props. If there wasn't money to be made, no one would do it.

Before deregulation, I got my round trip ticket to Hawai'i for $114- open departure, open return for one year, anyone could use it, additional islands cost $14 a hop. After a year I cashed in the unused portion of the ticket, although it had gotten completely destroyed from being hidden under a rock for a year in a single plastic bag. But they took the sodden lump of papper and eventually sent me the entire unused balance.

This winter I couldn't visit my family in Hawai'i because tickets were about $2200.

O.K., inflation since 1977 accounts for part of that, but gas at the time was about a buck and a half. No open departure, open return any more, no selling/giving your ticket to someone else, no refunds if you miss your flight or change your mind and decide to stay, no $14 island hops that you can use if you choose or get refunded for if you don't.

I'm not so sure this deregulation has been such a great thing, myself...

I know my memory isn't the greatest these days but I do remember air fares (at least on we routes we used) costing way less after deregulation. This winter we also went to Hawaii twice $269 round trip from Seattle. Yes, it still cost $75 to make a change and you can't get a refund. I remember being very surprised because it was Hawaiian that had the lowest fair and most often from here it's Northwest.

Aloha,
John A.

Loyalty is almost always going to go out the window when you start taking advantage of it.

Hi -

Posted this on the ATA thread, too. Andy, forgive me for the duplicate, but I think it's important:

Aloha,

The Hawaii Tourism Authority has secured two additional flights on Hawaiian Airlines, one departing for San Francisco on Monday, April 7 and the other on Wednesday, April 9. The flights are exclusively for ATA and Aloha Airlines ticket holders. Reservations will open for these flights at 12:00 noon, Saturday, April 5. Click herehttp://www.gohawaii.com/downloads/1207417391.34552000_ba2838efcf/ATA_HA_SFO-ATA%20Charters.pdf for complete details. Please share this information with your ATA and Aloha guests and customers.

Mahalo for your continued kokua,

John Monahan,
President & CEO

This could now make the Super Ferry a very important means of transportation, EIS or no EIS. Now what, I wonder, is in store for the Ferry. It is supposed to start running to Maui again this month. I wonder if their fares will jump sky high.

There absolutely has to be some type of economical transportation inter-island. This can make really bad for families who are scattered among the islands. Can make it bad for business people who thought nothing of hopping on an inexpensive flight between islands.

On the other hand, we had booked our trip to O`ahu about a week ago. All done and paid for. We are taking American as part of a package deal through Expedia.com. It is really cheaper for us to go Hawai`i than many other mainland vacations, including Florida, Disney, Arizona and many others. However, if I priced airfare separately, it was about $800 RT from CLE to HNL.

Sometimes I do not understand economics.

I am also leaning more and more toward the fact that perhaps the gov needs to take over the airlines and make them quasi-governmental like the post office. Some things are so important and so integral.

I mean, how long can Go! last? There is no way they can be making enough money to pay for the fuel or personnel costs, not even to mention equipment costs, fees to the airports, etc.

Maybe should start building an ultralight.

They've decided to begin service two weeks earlier than expected, beginning this Monday.

Thanks for posting that link, Guavasunrise. It is always very interesting, as well, to read the opinions posted on the newspaper site, of the kama`aina. A vast diversity of opinions. And as always, there are the opinions on there of the conspiracy theorists. Those who say the timing is mighty "fishy". That the Ferry just happened to be ready to sail again just as Aloha and ATA ceased flying. Collusion???? A second shooter on the grassy knoll?
