Retro - Birthday Boy, what exactly does an Emcee do? Do you have to tell jokes and stuff like that? Do you make music, too? And what's with the SENIOR radio host thing? You mean that birthday ending in -0 is not 30??? Or you like the spokes-model? Do you just go up there and look cute? Do you dance hula? Do you get nervous? What does Momi do while you are being the Emcee guy? Do Al & Braddah Ed and Jack and Kory and dem heckle you?
Ps: Is this the festival where Dennis Kamakahi has some mutual relatives/geneology link with the founder of the town or something like that? |

Hi, Wanda - Bill beat me to some of it...
I do a lot of emcee gigs for Hawaiian shows in the area, because of doing the radio shows and newspaper stories. Oh, and because I have a big ego and no shame. For Kalama, I'm on stage much of the day, letting the crowd know what acts are coming up, what activities are going on and where, providing continuity and such. I also tend to play some music with other folks, whenever needed.
Nervous? Nah. As Momi's dad sez, I'm not just a ham - I'm the whole pig! She likes to take pictures of the events while I'm busy on stage, and yes - those guys do heckle me, with great affection.
Uncle Dennis wrote a great song about Kalama (it's on one of his albums with Na Oiwi), and he performed it in Kalama at the first event in 2005 - he said John Kalama's spirit was right there at the time (as were many of his descendants, who still reside in the region); a real chicken-skin night. Guavasunrise can attest to that, too. |

Sorry, Noeau, in the flux of all that's going on in my life, I hadn't discussed it with you & Gary. I'd sure like us to go. We had a blast last year (as did Thumbs & me the year before). Let's do it! |
