Thought I would share the biggest SUPRISE I found on my return to home this year. In our little state of DELA-WHERE? someone has gone and opened not one but two Hawaiian themed restaurants.
We now have PONOS Hawaiian Fine Dining. and soon NALU Hawaiian Surf Bar & Grille The food at Ponos was OK but then it was opening night and I give them an A for effort. They welcomed us with Orchid leis and had an interesting menu.

NALU supposedly is going to have live music. THIS I GOTTA HEAR. When I play my Ukulele in Delaware most people do not even know what it is. But than again maybe it is the way I play and not the instrument. AH well I am just happy for any small tough of the Islands here at our Beach. Why before you know it there will be a HALAU HULA :-)

Accoring to the owner he would like to book Hawaiian acts but "My biggest problem so far is that these Hawaiian acts are asking way too much," Not sure what he means by Hawaiian Acts? But at least he answers E-mail.
So if any of you are in the Dewey Beach, Delaware Area this might be a open door if you are looking for one?

This IS a pleasant surprise! And I think that Hawaiian music will go over big in Delaware! The further south I go, the closer to D.C. I get, the more the brownies come out to support the music and culture. (This is true the more north I go, as well, thanks to Andy and his wife!)

I have just contacted NALU and - with any luck - maybe you will be hearing me there some night soon. I would love to have Andy with me, too, if I can talk him into it as we are becoming quite a dynamic duo (who don't get to perform together often enough).

BTW, Nancy, being from Delaware, did you ever have occasion to attend any of Auntie Yvonne King's annual lu`au before she passed away a few years ago? The whole town of Arden, DE would come out for her Hawaiian events. Plenty of lovers of Hawaiian music down your way...

Oh boy is my face red even though I went to UD I had to google Arden DE to see where it was so I guess you can already guess that was not lucky enough to have the experence.

In Delaware we have AC and BC Above the Canal and Below the Canal and unfortunatly the two do not often get together. Funny how I will drive to the City for Hawaiian Music but HATE to go to Wilmington or even to Dover for ANYTHING.
Here is hoping you get a GIG.
keep me informed I will be you cheering section.

I never made the luʻau but I did get to meet Auntie Yvonne. I last went down to Arden a few years ago to see Uncle Dennis, Patrick Landeza, Keoki Kahumoku, and Herb Ohta Jr. perform. Auntie Yvonne was there. I will forever remember celebrating our anniversary at Days Inn because that's where the boys were staying.

You are nothing if not romantic!

It is a small world... Because of Auntie Yvonne's Hawaii "connections," she got great acts like you mentioned to play this very, very small Delaware town. I had the pleasure of jamming with Keoki and Herb in Auntie Yvonne's backyard. Her annual lu`au was on Labor Day.

One of the years that I was in Hawai`i for Aloha Festivals, I had to miss Auntie Yvonne's lu`au. I walked into Harry's Music Store during Labor Day week and Herb was teaching. He said, "Sorry to hear about Auntie Yvonne." I said, "Hear what?" And Herb said, "She wen make on Labor Day." I couldn't believe I had to hear this from so far from home or that he heard before I did. The one year I missed the lu`au was to be her last.

My,my,my. How things have changed. When I grew up as a farm kid in Delaware, things Hawaiian seemed literally a half a world away. My only exposure was Hawaii 5-0 and hearing stories about Hawaii from an uncle, who somehow spent his whole time in the army during WW II, stationed in Hawaii. He told the story of being on coastal lookout for enemy subs and calling in a false sighting that put the whole navy on alert!! He always did have a tendency to exaggerate. They should have known better then to give him THAT job.

And Nancy, You are correct about being either AC (above the canal)or BC (below the canal). We were definitely BC. The standard joke was.....Two out of three cars on the road were tractors and the third was a pick-up truck.

I have fond memories of Dewey Beach.

Your fond MEMORIES blurry from Bottle and Cork Kine memeory or Sand Dune Kine Memory
:-) It is STILL a BIG PARTY town!
most locals here still trying to figure out how to put the genie back in the bottle just like Hawaii. Kinda wish we had never been discovered. My husbands Grandfather traded his Beach land for a farm inland CAUSE you know you can not grow anything in sand and this nice guy gave him twice as much land inland as he had here at the Beach traded 5 Acres of Ocean Front for 17 Acres Farm Land. Smart Deal that. "Waimanalo Blues" works well in many parts of the country.
They do not call us "LOWER SLOWER DELAWARE" for nothing.
Do you remember when they usta turn off the traffic lights on Labor day Board up all the stores and raise the speed limits cause no one around to worry about. WOW has it changed now.

In the mid 60's, we stayed at a beach house there. I seem to remember a Duck Pin Bowling Alley nearby. We also used to go to Dewey to get away from the crowds at Rehobeth. Even back then it could get crowded. It's been over 20 years since I've been to your area. I can only imagine the changes. We used to go duck hunting in Rehobeth Bay. Do they still do that, or is it too overbuilt with houses? Never went to the Bottle and Cork but I do remember it.
