More bad news from the airline industry. ATA has ceased all operations as of April 3rd and going the way of Aloha airlines. Unfortunately for me I had reservations on Aloha for my trip to the Kahumoku camp in June and had purchased a ticket for my grandaughter to fly from Arizona for the same trip: you guesed it, ATA. Does not look good for our plans. I hope that not too many of you are in the same shipwreck. Aloha, Jerry

We are in the same boat as Jerry. Had just purchased our ATA tickets about 3 weeks ago for the Kahumoku camp. I think we will be able to get our $$ from credit card. Now have to scramble to find a reasonable air fare to Maui. It is looking like a real challenge.

I worry what the impact will be on the Hawaiian economy with the reduction in flights. Who will pick up the slack? Things are looking gloomy to say the least.

Ah, I don't think there is anything such as a "reasonable" air fare to Hawai'i anymore....

Just recently I paid a down payment on our annual June trip, via a dear travel agent friend, and United, and paid the extra amount to get the trip insurance. Lucky for us!

I learned this lesson years ago, our family was planning a trip to Kaua'i, and my sister, whose husband worked for United, paid for 5 of her family members through a little known travel agent. Well, her dear husband had a major stroke, all the plans had to be cancelled, and she lost $1,200 just for cancelling the trip. Shortly after that, my Dad died in an accident, and so we just never got to our family vacation because our family is now kaput!

I think those of us who want to go there just have to bite the bullet and plunk down more money. I'm sure that many tourist destinations there are suffering as well. When money is tight, most folks will only go to the grocery store but forego all the other pleasures of life: music, arts, fine dining, fine instruments.

I think we're in this recession for the long haul, folks. Everyone should tighten their belts but still try to keep some sanity in their lives. After all, we just never know how our lives will change within the blink of an eye.

I, for one, will go for the gusto. I will work harder and longer just so I can go to my beloved Hawai'i and see my beautiful friends and ohana there. Teri, Jerry, Diane, I'll be waiting for you, cocktail in hand, on the rock wall watching the sunset!

Aloha ahiahi,

Julie
