If you felt a rumbling emminating from the intersection of McCully and Young Streets last evening, it was likely the unexpected meeting of four Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest winners.
After hearing and jamming with Pomai Keawe-Lyman and Aunty Genoa's Hawaiians at the Marriott, I arrived at Chiko's to hear Na Hoa. The group's regular, Ikaika Blackburn, unable to make it, 2004 Big Island contest winner Matthew Sproat filled in for the evening. When I walked into the place, 2004 O`ahu winner Lawrence Pau (who beat me that year) was already at the microphone. And I was greeted by 1996 O`ahu winner, `Ale`a's Kala`i Stern. It was a parade of falsetto on that stage if you include the four winners plus Hale Seabury-Akaka and Brandon Souza.

I wish I was there for the event. You know, my CD has still not been released. I guess being out-of-sight-out-of-mind, the recording industry no care. LOL.
Well, maybe next year I will get a chance to attend. Working like crazy here in Seattle. School bus driving is good fun, but lots of work. So, I have to schedule this one very carefully.
A hui hou,

Well, in a perfect world, I would. But once you have won and made a CD, you cannot compete again.
However, I regret to inform everyone that there will be no falsetto contest this year. It has declined in popularity over the years so much that they cannot get a full complement of contestants to fill up an evening's entertainment for the price of the ticket. Years ago, 25 to 30 gents would send audition tapes and the best ten would be picked to perform. In recent years, fewer than 10 audition tapers have been received. That means that everybody gets to participate but all of the singers are not top quality. This results in a show that is no longer worth of the price of admission - and one that is too short at that with only 5 or 6 performers.
Now add to this that the event is no longer televised, so the winners receive little or no exposure. And the event that used to draw 750 to 1000 attendees for the live show last drew only about 150. So there is nobody to cheer the singers on.
So this is not a place where Aloha Festivals is going to spend its limited resources this year.

I am very sad to hear that. Once again, it seems the older styles of music are not commercially viable. Well, I will continue buying the music as I can afford it, and I applaud those who have put their hearts into this contest. |

Sometimes, I think those are my favorite styles. (People see my record/CD collection and tend to go..."Whaaa? Who...? I never heard of...") |

Much of ours is far from the mainstream. People ask where I find songs, and I say "At festivals, campouts, Slack Key Paradise, Sugar In The Gourd, Rats Won't Stay Where There's Music." They never heard of my internet radio choices, either. Paul |

The cancellation of the 2008 falsetto contests in the islands isn't final...yet.
Just got off the phone with Flip McDiarmid (Hula Records) -- who oversees production of the annual CD. While the Aloha Festivals folks have dropped the ball on the contests, he's weighing the possibility of Hula Records hosting the contests instead. Gotta find a venue on O`ahu for the "grand finale" concert...in addition to deciding if Hula Records can take on this project, in addition to their regular busy schedule.
My fingers are crossed...will keep you posted!!! |
